How are you killing so many crows?
« on: January 14, 2006, 05:40:05 PM »
I must ask for your secrets.  I have read some of your posts where you tell of killing several crows on one stand.  Where I hunt in SC if we get more than 3 or 4 per stand we have really done something.  We usually try to hunt in cover and find that 10-12 year old pine plantations seems to work real well.  We will try to let the first one come in and then let them have it after that.  However, after a couple of shots they are gone and will not keep coming back.  We use a death cry of a crow tape, is there one that may be better?  Do we need to try something else along with this one?  We have tried decoys, but they never seem really interested in them either.  I am eager to see what suggestions you can give us.  Oh by the way, I refer to crow hunting as "red-necked duck hunting" -- think about it, what do you think?  And I sure do love doing it!!!!

Decoys are a must in my opinion, I actually had a crow back in september (last crow hunt b 4 deer season) land with my decoys. My buddy promptly KOed him with his 12 ga.

Calling for a while, shooting the first few, the pausing for 5 to 10 minutes before calling again has worked best for us. If its seems that you can't bring any more in and that they are "on" to you then pick up and move to another location.

I use 1 owl decoy and 6 crow decoys. When I get out first thing in the morning I'll get set up and have the crow/owl fight ready to go. When you hear the first crows of the morning come off the roost and start calling, its go time. That call and the fight scene really get them fired up at first light. As the morning goes on I go to other calls like crows fighting or crow in distress. We don't hunt huge tracts of land and normally the tracts we hunt we can only get 2 good stands but a dozen crows in a mornings hunt is not uncommon.

my tech works good for us.... 150 crows in 2 hours

ive been crow hunting since before you could buy tapes and we had to use a modified elk call turned into a crow call.

i cut decoys from light weight ply wood-- 1/8 masonite or anything i can find. paint em black and use coat hangers to stake em down. cut a few stakes and drill hole in the bottoms of the decoys and slip em on when you get there. add to that 6 full body decoys- a crow and a stuffed puppy dog with a decoy heart in it in the middle.. and bam-- crows in rows!

i like setting up on a large field in the edge with the decoys out in front. if you can find some food, corn, millet, any kiind of head feed-- this is where theyll be. our best day- 150 crows in 2 hours with 3 shooters. we had to leave and gon to walmart to get more shells! so actually it was 150 crows in about an hour and half!!!
crow and owl fight add a motion decoy. once that slows kill the call and wait untill you see a flyer by. hit him with either death cry of a crow or go to the owl fight... the singles to me are the most fun.

Camo was a must for us guys and then decoys, both crow and an owl, and learn to call well. You let them get mobbing that owl decoy and they wont leave even as you stand there firing at them.

a strange sound by accident
« Reply #4 on: January 26, 2006, 05:55:08 AM »
I made a strange sound by accident when using my call that absolutely
cleared the field I was trying to call about 30 crows from. They began circling and diving like crazy.. I have since figured out how to do it on purpose and it makes them wild,   It is impossible for me to describe it but I am going to try
to save it onto a sound file in my computer. I will try to figure out how to post it.
I have since heard a crow make a similar sound when a Red tail hawk was in the area so I guess it is some sort of angry "LETS GET THIS GUY" kind of call
that makes them all want to gang up on someyhing and kick some butt....

If you can record it I sure would like to see what kinda sound it is. May be some distress call that some of us use, or it may even be something "ouside the box" you've hit on.

I used it yesterday and I have honestly never seen so many
crows circling at one time in my life..  they were in a very tight cluster and looked like a giant swarm of bees..My brother opened up on them
with his 20 ga. at about 80 to 90 yards up. I know that is high but he was using #5 - 3 in. turkey loads and they were in such a tight group that he simpy could not miss. we were hunting from one of our 1\2 acre whitetail food plots and were well concealed so they were right over us. I am not sure how many he dropped but for several minutes he hammered away as fast as he could with his long double barrel. looked like a bunch of black helicopters falling. We had a blast.. Next time I will have a shotgun
instead of my 17 mach2 (We started the day hunting Rabbits on the fence line, I was ill prepared for aerial targets  )

stupid crows,,he he he,,they are flying around here this time of year headed some place.some hang out all year, but seems most head out to greener fields.lord knows we have none around here.I find them out in the desert on old power line poles, settin on the cross members.I have a custom .220 swift ackely improved.I guess they think they are safe 4 and 5 poles down..he he he...they are not....those 40gr.blitz kings are bad JUJU on them.
but I have a tape that I mess with them with.it is called crow revivel.and I turn that on and they take off from the trees and gather round and fly right to the caller.cawin like crazy. If I can hear them, and point the caller at them they come..I think it's pretty kool.not sure whats more sportin..wait till they land and shoot them with a very high velocity centerfire or blast the tar out of them while on the wing.
an ole boy was tellin me that his granpa started to plant corn one year and the crop was kinda L shaped that he planted along a tree line.and the crows came in so thick and fierce that in two days they just about ruined the crop.so he and a friend used that farmer TNT recipe courtisy of the cia and ran it on top of the tree line.when all the crows landed they touched it off..blew the trees to hell and the crows.and the fuel set all the crops on fire.he he he...good ole days..
