9.3mm x .338 Win Mag?
« on: February 20, 2003, 11:50:16 AM »
Anyone have any thoughts about a new medium bore, consisting of a .338 win mag necked up to take 9.3 mm (i.e. .366") bullets?  The .366  bore is  midway between the .358 and .375 and there are some really nice bullets made in this caliber by Nosler, Barnes, Swift, Speer, Woodleigh and possibly others.

The 286 grain Nosler partition should bet about 2600-2700 fps in this chambering and should be pretty effective.

Anyone else have any thoughts in this regard?

I used to be intriqued by wildcats, but after playing with a few, find they are alot of money to produce something that can be achieved with std rounds.

If I wanted a 9.3, I'd go with the X62, as CZ makes a nice reasonably priced rifle in that round.  If you want more snuff, have it rechambered to 9.3X64, which is pretty much what your wildcat would be, though factory dies and brass would be available.

PaulH:  Your points are well taken.  Question though: Where do you get 9.3x64 brass?  Would have to be special ordered. Can it be formed from any existing American case?  That would be the advantage of using the standard belted magnum case. It's cheap and you could form 9.3 x 338 cases from a multitude of other belted mag calibers, i.e. .300 Win mag,  300 H&H, 375 H&H . 458 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Wby mag, etc.  My only thought.

if you are going after a solder beater why not go to the 9.3 x74r the brass is availabe from norma and loaded ammo it availabel from several suppliers.  it is a rimmed case but you talk about a meat dropper it does the job.  also several of the sharps and highwall gun makers are starting to produce guns in this caliber also

just a thought

Advocate,
I just saw this thread and wanted to add my .02 C's worth. I am a LARGE fan of the 2.5" belted case! I have reloaded for both of the Taylors: the 375-338 and the 416. They simply work. Out of a 24" barrel, the 375-338 achieves 2700fps with 270 grainers and 2550fps with 300 grainers, matching closely the H&H. I would say that your velocity estimate for the 9.3 is spot on. My 416 is a Mauser 98 based rifle that was completed for $800.00 sans scope and had a couple of "fancy" touches added that could have saved a little off the initial $ tag. Not bad at all. The 375 started life as a Rem 700 in 7mm mag and was rebarreled to it's current configuration. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and a wildcat should hold no mysteries to the reloader. If you have your head set on this wildcat, It could be done for not much more than the cost of any old factory plain jane. The die set would cost more, and the 375 would probably out perform it, but there is no denying that it would be an effective taker of game! As you pointed out, brass is very reasonable and available anywhere. Count me in as a supporter.! 8)
best,
bhtr
