Encore scope mounting advice
« on: January 27, 2006, 01:54:12 AM »
Hi there,

Recently acquired an Encore with the synthetic stock in .308 and a Leupold 3-9x40 scope.  Thinking of going with the Leupold dual dovetail mounting system.  Just wondering if there's any reason not to go with the low rings.  Holding the gun in a natural shooting position, it feels like my sight line is higher than normal.  Am I cracked, or has anyone else needed to go with anything other than low rings for proper head alignment?  Any advice is welcome.

Thanks in advance,
nels

I have personnally gone to high rings (leupold DD & QR) for a couple reasons. One of the reasons is to get my thumb under the scope to pull the hammer back. I had a hammer extension milled for my encore and my fathers but we both experienced misfires so we took the extensions off. The other reason is that my line of sight thru the scope is better with high rings. But thats just my preference. I think you might need a hammer extension with low rings, but the guys here might have more helpful info for you. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

I almost always mount my scopes on my Encores with low rings. But if I get a larger bell I get the size rings that will allow me to mount the scope as close to the barrel as possible. I have used hammer extensions for years and never had a single fail to fire.  I don't like rings that are to high, it makes me have to stretch my neck up to get scope alignment. It just does not feel natural. JMHO.  :D  but do what works best for you. Also great choice of scope.  :D

I guess I'm adaptable.  Some of my Encore barrels have high rings and others low.

If the barrel has no iron sites, I'd prefer low rings if possible.  If the barrel has iron sites, I go with Kwik Sites see through bases/rings since I can then mount a scope and use the iron sites for a backup or close shooting if necessary.  Kwik Sites of necessity mount the scope quite high.

This is just my opinion, but the see through scope rings are useless, If I want to use iron sights I don't mount a scope. If I use a scope I don't use the iron sights.  The see through rings put the scope to high and makes you have to rise your head to high off the stock to get a good sight picture.

Everybodies face is different but with the low warne rings and bases, I had to add an Eagle Stock Pack to get what I felt was the correct cheek weld on the Encore.

If the scope is mounted on see through rings it compromises both sight systems.  The scope is to high to get consistent cheek weld, so poi can change shot to shot unless you always shoot at the range the scope is paralax corrected for.  And the iron sights are shrouded by the scope mounts limiting field of view.  I can't see a use for them.

I tend to put my scopes as low as possible. I have noticed with a factory Encore stock that a slightly higher scope mount makes a better fit for me.
