223 superlight, ammo ?

what deer load (55-62g softpoint or hp) that works best with your 223 superlight?

IMHO, no ammount of wishful thinking will make a .223 a good deer rifle. Just to light, leaves no room for error. Regardless of how good of a shot you are things never happen perfect in the deer woods and such a small bullet leaver little room for error.

Do yourself a favor and buy a .270, .280, .30-06, etc. If you really prefer lighter guns or maybe you are some what recoil shy then think about a .260 or .243.

Now that I gave my $0.02 I'm sure some people that religiously hunt deer with .223 will join in. Bring on the debate!  :D

I started to put the "don't want to discuss ballistics"
but didn't bother
ok...
so here it goes

I shoot a 243, it's dropped a LOT of Texas Whitetails
I have also dropped a lot with a 223 and so have lots of other people I grew up hunting with
I have never had to track one

this is for my 9 year old son
he will be with me and I will restrict his shooting to 75 yard shots and ONLY if the deer is well positioned, we typically hunt out of a blind, so, getting a solid rest and a well placed shot drops them dead in their tracks

I go for neck shots, clean kill or a clean miss

Hello Charles, I knew whole bunch guys in central Texas that used
 all the 22 center fires for deer hunting, in fact I was one when  I
lived there. these people that hunt big deer think you need big bore.
 If you reload I try 55 Spit if not I would go wally world get 55gr
 Winny whitr box. Just my 2 cents.Marv.

In wisconsin we have a doe only hunt and I was debating about taking my 223 out for a head shot at 100 yards. another one of those clean miss or clean kill situations. Does anybody here have experience with this sort of thing?

If you roll your own, Winchester makes a 64-grain bullet that would work good on deer.  Should stabilize OK in a handi.

What most people that have not seen or hunted C T whitetails,
 They are not much bigger than a good sized jack rabbit. and are
 easy drop with good shoot place ment. Marv.

I shoot this bullet out off a nef handy gun and cant believe how good it does. One inch at 50 yards with a red dot sight , 5 shot group. Not to shabby for a 5 moa dot scope. By the way this bullet has proven it's self on 3 white tails . Ranges from 25 to 60 yards . Two went less than 25 yards after lung shots ,and one dropped outright after a hit in the shoulder! All bullets expanded and penetrated completely!! Thank you Winchester.

I personally have used it in an HBAR 1-7 twist and they held together and stabilized; also work good in my M700
Remington'a 12-twist tube.

I don't know if Winchester loads them in factory 223 ammo but they sure should.

That Winchester 64gr has been reported as shooting real well in 1:12" .223 barrels, should be even better in the new 1:9" twist barrels!!

I would highly recommend getting something using the winchester 64 gr power point.
I had a freind who shot one (I witnessed the after effects on both of the deer shot) and it hit the shoulder and went through BOTH shoulders, dropping the deer instantly, the other one was shot in the chest and went maybe 20 feet and piled up.

Tremendous damage!

That is the bullet I will be using in the future in my 223!

my dad has been shooting a Sako 22-250 he built in 66, he handloaded extensively and did a bunch, I mean a bunch of hunting and testing different loads..
he is still using 63g sierra soft points, loads he made 20 years ago

I bought a superlight youth 223 for my daughter to hunt with, did get to go this year. I am thinking the 53 DPX bullet by Corbon or a 50 -55 Trophy Bonded Softpoint from Federal. As you said her shots will be 75 yards or under and under my direct supervision.

picked up the gun yesterday
I bought some winchester 64g powerpoints yesterday and some ultramax 55g sps for breakin

cut the stock down 3/4 of an inch and mounted a weaver 3-9x32 AO I took off my cz452 22 to get it sighted in
