I don't see anything on here about Randall knives, I have a model 25 that has served me well. It has a nice stag handle dressed out with nickel silver and brass with a 5inch drop point blade. Anybody here own and use Randall Made knives.

My next knife is going to be the Model 1. Been wanting one forever. Had intentions of getting it until I ran across Ernie Grospitch's knives. But I'll get one.

I grew up in Florida and owned several Randal knives in the 60's. Think I paid $35.00 back then each for the last 2 I bought. That was about half of a weeks paycheck for me then.

Recently I decided to buy a new one. I ordered one (4yr wait) unless you pay scalper prices. They are actually cheaper now in terms of percentage of a weeks paycheck.  Regards, Byron

I have a model 25 "Trapper" on order. Couple more years before delivery. I visited Bo Randall's shop in the 60's but couldn't afford one back then. Was still in High School, only worked part time and was saving for college. Wanted one my whole life. I may order a #5 soon. See a lot of them at gunshows around here since we are close to the shop but the prices run nearly double from ordering direct. Oh well; anything worth having is worth waiting for.

Got this one for Fathers day. Have a couple others as well. Glad I don't really need any more as there is about a 4 or 5 year wait these days. Have a MDL 3-6 I would sell for $475.00 shipped, LNIB., but not in a hurry to do so. :)

I collect Randalls and am at 12 right now.  My user is also a 25 - 5".  It has a polished stag insert and I wouldn't trade it for the world.  I just happened to have received a very nice knife from my local Randall dealer, Rick Ward in Atlanta, today.

It is a 12 - 8" Bear Bowie, Crown Stag, Stainless, scalloped collar.  Man, I was happy to get her!

Brief Report on a superlative Randall-patterned kife
« Reply #11 on: February 19, 2006, 10:49:59 AM »
Here is a brief report on knives of a classic Randall pattern, whose delivery will be less than 60 days, and whose workmanship and materials will cause you to tremble.

I received my Hattori KD30-2A (5.2-inch blade) last week. My graphic is inadequate. It shows the blind tang versions. My knife has a stag handle with traditional Randall Duralumin butt cap-with-nut.

While it is a close copy of Randall's Model 5, it is superior in precision of manufacture, in detail assembly -- in every respect save one. Hattori’s included sheath is as I expected -- bland. The knife deserves better. Sullivan’s sheath for Randall’s M25-5 looks to be an excellent choice. If only Mr. Sullivan would get back to me with a price.

For anyone interested in buying a production knife that is superior to any custom knife I have handled -- there are probably several custom makers who do comparable quality knives, I just haven't seen their work -- the best price I found is from Jemmy Iwahara "Kencrest" <jemmy@kencrest.us>. Quality of service, quality of his personal advice is excellent.

Similarities between Randall and Hattori's outdoorsman's KD30-1A/2A series are close. Their knives are production knives in the sense that knives are made to a pattern. Randall "customizes" by offering many options within fixed production parameters. Hattori apparently offers garden-variety knives of common materials by the thousand.

Hattori also has a segment of their business that makes very small numbers of outdoorsman's knives and chef's knives of Cowry X (layered with AISI 420) Damascus. There are limited patterns and options versus Randall's many patterns and options.

Apparently Hattori maintains a tiny inventory of Cowry X outdoorsman's knives; most orders are built to an order within 60 days.

B U T . . . where Randall is out of the built-to-order knife business -- building a hundred knives with unusual handles or markings counts for nothing in my built-to-order world -- Hattori will make one-of-a-kind knives. I haven't received my quote yet for my two built-to-order knives, I try not to think about cost.

Hattori will not sell at retail. The best prices with selection I found is from Mr. Jemmy Iwahara http://www.japaneseknifedirect.com/Hattori.html.

The Iwahara family operates a large cutlery import-export business. Finding the universe of outdoorsman's Cowry X Damascus knives is a major headache. I recommend you E-mail him Kencrest <jemmy@kencrest.us>, using LANCE as your reference, and ask for what you need.
