Bogmaster Read This A Little Interesting.
« on: January 27, 2006, 05:00:02 PM »
I was talking to the most experienced trapper in my town today while he was fleshing my mink for me. Hes only caught 5 mink this year, but he told me that when he was 25 years old that he wanted to catch mink and only mink. He told me that mink were real thick in Mercer County and a couple of other countys close by me. He told me that season he set out to trap mink he caught 69 mink and put 10,000 miles on his truck that season. He had a mink coat made for his wife with it. He showed it to me and it was one of the coolest things I have ever seen. He told me that if I really wanted to catch mink I just had to know where to look for them and that I wouldn't catch alot around the same area, but had to put some miles on my truck to catch lots of them. He says if I am really serious about trapping them then thats the only way i'm going to be able to get numbers of them wrapped up in one season. Now hes more concentrated on catching otter. Hes caught 10 of them this season, 11 if you count one he had stolen out of his trap. He told me what countys I should target when trying to catch mink and lots of good facts about mink in my area. He told me he caught most of his mink by digging pocket sets that resemble muskrat holes. He said he dug them halfway under water and halfway above. He said he would sit 1 1/2" Coilsprings in front of the hole and put jack mackeral on the top of it. He said it was the best trapping season he ever had, but he just don't have the time to do that anymore. Go that far and set out as many traps as he did. But knowing that somone in my town once caught 69 mink in one season just gives me more confidence. And bog I was wondoring if 220s would work instead of 330s if I wanted to save a little money and I don't really trust 330s. Will I miss more beaver this way or will it be ok?

Using 220s won't save you money, they will cost you money.Using them will cause more misses and educated beaver ,than you can shake a stick at.

Ok bogmaster I see well then I guess i'm just going to have to stick with my loyal 330. Also this weekend I did set a 220 in a channal hoping to catch my first beaver at a creek where I know theres beaver. All I caught in it was a muskrat. Oh well next weekend i'm setting the same channal and hopefully i'll get that beaver.
