Hi,
I am new to the boards, have read numerous threads in the nef and t/c encore boards and still up in the air about which way to go.
I have won a Encore in a raffle and have yet to pick it up. I am interested in occasional varmint hunting and whitetail. I am looking for advice or oppinions on whether i should use the in store credit and get say 3 different caliber handi's or one encore??
Either way i go it will cost me little to no money as I won the rifle.
The cals. I am interested in are the .204, 7-08, and .280.
If i go the handi route i can have all of them at one shot or if i go the encore route it will take me alot longer to get the 3 desired calibers and several hundred more dollars.
thanks for the input
john

For me, the answer would be easy because I really like Encores!  I would go with the Encore.  There are so many stock options, etc. available for it and Thompson/Center as treated me VERY well on items I sent to them for repair.  In a couple of instances, I bought used barrels on eBay that malfunctioned and they repaired and shipped them back to me at no charge even though I told them I bought the barrel used.

As far as the caliber is concerned, from the 3 choices you gave, I would go with the 7mm/08 since it would do fine for varmints and deer and is a relatively low recoil inherently accurate cartridge.  The other two would work as well though many would consider the .204 a bit light for deer.  The .280 is fine as well but you probably don't need that much horsepower for varmints.

With the Encore, there are other very fine choices for the kind of hunting you intend to do.  The ones that come to mind are the .22/250 Rem., .243 Win. and .25/06.  Best of all, when you decide to go Elephant hunting, you can get a .375 H&H Magnum or a .416 Rigby barrel for it.

Evening Tinpeddler,

You might want to give consideration to the .243 Win.  Ammo is readily available at just about any store and there's a good bullet selection for the hunting your describing.

I have four barrels: .375 H&H Mag, 20 ga., 209x50, and the .243.  Figure I can hunt just about anything...anywhere with that selection.

Just food for thought!  Good luck,

Karl
T/C Encore: .375 H&H Mag w/Leupold 3-9x40 and KDF Slimline Muzzlebrake, .243 Win, .20 ga, and 209x50 w/Leupold 3-9x40.

The Encore hand down.  7mm08 or 270 would be my choice.  :D

You get what you pay for.

I had a buddy who bought a handi rifle.

He returned it a week later.

I won't have another Handi. One Encore is worth any 3 Handi's you can throw at it.
