OK, I know that is a very general pole. And that points don't really tell much about the size of the rack....this was just a curiosity question. Please feel free to give more details about the big ones that didn't get away. Great to hear stories about deer hunting in the off-season.

BTW, where I hunt seeing a decent 8 pointer is really something. "Trophy" is definitly relative to where you are hunting. My best just so happened to be an 8 pointer.

Where I hunt, seeing ANYTHING with a rack is an unusual event, so we aren't too choosey. I hunt in the Adirondacks and there is a very low deer density. Not much forage, no real "funnels", etc. This year, I got a 10 pointer, 179 lbs. For me, that's the deer of a lifetime of hunting. He'll be watching over me (or at least his head will be) when he gets back from his date with the taxidermist.

Nearly missed him, too. He came from behind me and to the right and I had to thread a bullet down through some trees through a 2.5 foot alleyway to hit him at 70 yards as he turned to his left on a well-used trail. He was just walking, but with that small an area, I knew I only had one chance at him. Just as I squeeze off, he steps down off a hummuck into the swamp we were in. Thought I missed him but I clipped his back and dropped him. An inch higher and I'd be singing the blues.

Buck of a lifetime and I just about miss him. Oh, well, that's why he got old, I guess, doing the unexpected.

I got a 10 point last season that scored in the 120's and this year I got a 10 point that scored 137.  :D

Yeah, I know how you feel about finding bucks Daks. Really makes me sick when I watch Jackie Bushman or Bill Jordan pass up a "young" 10 point.  :roll: Thanks for the story too.

Sounds like a pair of gorgeous bucks Redhawk!

.308, nice shooting. Sure that spike tasted just as good as any 12 pointer. Heck, probably better.

Largest to date 12 point, scored 159.  I thank the lord I usually kill a couple of bucks a year, but they are usually small racks.

My largest was an eight point. Actually got 2 eight points that season, one young eight point with a homemade kit muzzleloader, and a mature 8pt with my 270 Ruger No.1. Both pretty typical northern Adirondack bucks, at least for my area. My best season ever and one I'll never forget. Antler size has gone down hill since then...

Eight pointer was my best. Just got him last week  :grin:
Theres alot of deer here & many folks get 10's & some 12's even. Best I'v seen hunting was a sweet 10 pointer but he didn't come close enuff.  :?
Seems they know where theyre safe, I'll see a big buck 1/4 mile from one of my hunting spots feeding under a bird feeder in broad daylight that wont show his face in a huntable spot till after dark. Until last year I thought I just had bad spots & then I got a trail cam & it changed my mind. If theres deer, theres bucks both big & small, just they dont get big by being easy to kill is all.  :grin:

Out here (Montana) we rank the spread of the deers rack(muledeer) above the amount of points on the antler,so I would have to say my best buck is 38" wide non-typical muley I took in 2004.

Nice buck, I love a rack with character like that. I killed a "peg-legged" buck in 2004 too!

Third day of VA muzzleloader I spotted this buck working some overhead branches. Then as he walked off I noticed a little hitch in his step. He was a 1.5 year old buck but I thought "those d*** yahoo neighboors done wounded another." After a stalk I worked up to within 20 yards. He was still behind some greenbriers so as I slowly came to my knees I still couldn't see his legs. He dropped at the shot and I walked up to find him missing his right front leg from the knee down. The injury was completely healed so I figured it happened when he was a button buck. Made the little 5 point rack pretty unique.

Just goes to show the will to survive in wild animals. This buck made it through a hard winter, living in the presence of coyotes and black bears, and still lived until he met the business end of a .50 cal.

I made the mistake of killing at 140 class buck that went about 220 lbs. at 17!  I doubt I'll see another like that for a while, especially in SC (unles I go to the sandhills, or a ranch, which I have absolutely no plans to due.)  It is a funny story. I shot him on the move with my Ruger 77/50 ML, he was after a doe and wouldn't stop.  He didn't kick or buck or twitch or anything and I    knew I had hit him good. (I had an even more healthy appreciation of my ability then than I do now.)  I made the mistake of almost immediately going to the spot he was standing when I took the shot to look for blood, and there was none, nor could I find any hair, so I followed the game trail to the point I last saw him.  Still no blood.  I turned the corner on the trail around a blackberry thickett and he stood up not 15 feet from me, so I went to shoot him again and learned why you alway reload a ML immediately after the 1st shot.  I would like to say "click" and nothing but there wasn't even a click.  :oops: We stood there looking at each other for about 3-4 hours (that's what it seemed like.) and he finially laid back down and died.  He did not shake or stumble or anything.  Just laid down like that was his choice and he was ready for a nap.  That is one experience I hold near and dear.

Eight point with an extra brow tine to make it nine.  Never had him scored, but figure low 130's.  Followed a doe right in to my stand, but I couldn't get a decent shot down into the thicket I was above.  I watched them for about a half hour, then he finally walked through my shooting lane.  Zippered him with my Evolution and Assassin broadhead at twenty-two yards.  I was shaking like a 225 pound squirrel up in that tree.  God, I wish it was November year round, and no bag limit!  That must be what heaven is like.  Good luck to all during spring turkey season!

My thought process over the years was, "first out, first to hit the ground".
   That has gotten me (2) ten pointers over the years.
   The first one was a brute. I know this because i was a lot younger back then and my legs felt like jelly after dragging him out of the woods. The old guys know about that.
  The second one i shot while relaxing in a tree stand.  Didn`t have to drag that puppy anywhere used the jeep. Progress is a thing of the future. A Yogi-ism.
