new gun?
« on: January 24, 2006, 01:41:45 PM »
Can anyone give me some ideas on a new pistol? I'm wanting a semi-auto in either 9mm or .40 caliber. I haven't shot any semi-auto's in a while and the last one I did shoot was a P85 ruger and was very impressed with it. It's income tax time and I have a little cash to spend and I'm wanting a good CCW and general all around shooter. Thanks for any help, Worm.

All the`Ruger P series are great pistols.I Have a KP95DC, KP90DC and the new KP345DC. Their GP 100  357 is a great revolver too. I have a Glock 22 40 cal also, but prefer the Rugers.

Ifg you are going to carry, the Ruger P95's are good. Polymer lower and stainless or blue slide. Have never had a failure with mine. I also have the P94 in .40 caliber and the 345 in .45 acp. Also just bought a S & W Sigma in 9mm that I like a lot even though some people like to bash them. Can't go wrong with any of the Rugers, but they are big.

:D Just have to say.............SIG 229.  Get the .40 and a .357 barrel and chang calibers when you wish.  If you want to lay out a few more bucks pick up a 9mm barrel and mag. and you can shoot all three calibers from the same gun.

And to top it off, You just don't get any better quality than a Sig.  JMHO.

Thanks for the heads up guys. I still haven't made up my mind, but was leaning towards the rugers more than anything else. Thinking of a semi-auto, but a good revolver is never out of the question. Went to two different gun stores today and drooled all over their cases. Made a mistake and brought the wife along thinking she might help me pick one out. She got bored so we left. I'll know better next time.
Thanks again, Worm.

wormbobskey, I have owned the Rugers and think they are way to bulky for CCW. I carry a Clot Defender in 45 ACP that is not even as bulky. I also have a Sigma 9mm that is less bulky. If you really want a slim semi-auto look at the Sig 229. The Rugers I had shot fine but just way to fat.

I have the P89 in 9mm. That gun is a little on the big side. But fun to shoot. My 40 in Glock is one of my favorites. :D

Wormbobskey...You really need to get to the gun shops and put your hands on some semi-autos to see what fits your needs.  Then give us a list of what you are looking at and we can give you feedback...There are just too many that would work to give you the info you need.

You might like the way the Glock, Springfield XD's, Sigs, S&W's, Rugers, etc feel or that may be a way of eliminating some of the above mentioned gun makers...Give it a shot.

Good luck...

Hard to go wrong nowdays, CZ, Glock, Kahr, Springfield, Walther,  Ruger, Kimber, and others I can't think of at the moment. Just about everone makes a decent semiauto these days. Handle as many of them as you can and see which one rings your bell.

The only gun I have ever carried concealed was a 1911 when I was in the army. I was an armorer in an MP company and had to carry it. If I could afford another one I'd have another 1911. Might have a ruger lined up, but have to talk to the guy tomorrow. He also has a colt .38 for sale. I like to shoot the .38's, but have always felt undergunned with one. Not that I'm looking for a gun fight, but I would rather have to much than not enough. Still wanting to hook up on a p series ruger, but will take what I can afford. Worm

Well...If you want to look for a used 1911 you might be able to come in under your budget numbers...Give it a shot.  There are plenty of quality used firearms out there...Put your hands on some.  I did forget to mention Kimber before...Another quality manufacturer...

The rugers are nice and shoot well but are big IMHO to use as a carry gun. If you want a real nice carry gun and something built like a tank plus something that looks nice too, then you should give the CZ 75 compact a good look - they offer the compact in a 9mm or a 40cal. These guns are very affordable and are made to last not to mention they will shoot with the best of them. Read up on them a little and see what you think. You can pick up a nice nickel model for about $400 plus shipping, new in the box from whittakers in KY.

Here is a pic of the blued and nickel model as well as a little reading.
