What all is in volved in rechambering a handi lets say from 243 to 243Ai. I know sometimes on bolt guns you have to set the barrel back. Just currious.

being that you can not set the barrel back on a handi you must pick a rechamber that will completely clean up the chamber as far as i know the 243 ai will not clean up the 243 chamber you may want to look into the 6mm ai.

but after you pick a chamber that will clean up the old you just send it to a smith and have him cut it.

so it has to be longer& wider then original to avoid head space issues. I thought that might be the case just thought I would check first

not to discourage you from doing it,but out of all the cartridges to choose from,why try to get a little extra "oomph" out of a cartridge instead of getting one that already has it?

If it's just to own a "unique" rifle,I say "go for it" but ballistically speaking,something already chambered HAS to be CLOSE.......just my :money:

well i'm hoping that fred or quick might get on here with some details but it does have to be longer , but sometimes it can be the same width , such as the 243 to 6mm ai the width is just about the same what matters is that its not smaller.

One other thing to keep in mind is not to rechamber to a cartridge that has too much presser (just stick away from mags)

The ackleyimproved page was started by me and my friend Jeff Milander. Ha. we had a lot of fun with the 243AI. Many many stories about that caliber and loads by the bushel.

Many target shooters where in on it too, we found the 40 deg shoulder produced jams for fast target shooting, to take advantage of the conditions

We also found later that my own 6x47FM did a much better job. So much better that the Swiss produced it and called it 6x47SM (Swiss Match) with a different shoulder angle.

All I can say the Handi is a poor platform for a 243AI in more ways than one , and hand reaming will not produce a clean smooth lead accross the lands, it takes 50-60 RPM to do that. This little detai alone will make a big difference in accuracy.

Oh yes a Handi 243 can be chambered for a 243 Imp or AI if you want to call it that without setting the shoulder back but you may not be able to use factory 243 Ammo.

You wont be able to tell unless you got a 24x bore scope. The bullet will tell when it gets chewed up.

If your chamber is a bit big at the shoulder you can find an AI reamer with a .469 shoulder. There are reamers galore. I have a 243AI reamer that was ground with a long neck by mistake.

It actually made a better 243AI. Which by the way is not a real AI since it will not shoot factory ammo with the tight and long neck neck, and brass is made from 6mm Rem or 7x57 or 30-06 in Jeffs case.

I was just using the .243Ai as an example. Reading Freds post on his project got me to wondering what all was involved and how to go about it then any sort of cartridge debate. Sorry bout the can o worms but since we got em lets go fishing :grin:

No one mentioned that there are a whole bunch of "non-can-of worms" rechambers possible. Since 1970 I've done a 22 Hornet to 225 Winchester, 357 Mag to 357 Max, 30-30 to 30-40 (third being done right now). Several other members have done the 357 mag to 357 Max, 44 Mag to 445 Mag, and 30-30 to 30-30AI, all of which worked very well, due to them being rimmed cases. So if you want to do something fun and unique, go to it. And... if you want to bring the worms I'll show you some real good Brown and Brookie trout fishing come spring.

Getting ready to rechamber a 357 max to 356 Win., as the throat on the Max is so long, the bullet is out of the case before it contacts the throat/rifling. Will rechamber a 357 mag. to Max when I get that receiver back from its barrel fitting. Maybe even rechamber the 38-55 to 38-72! :shock: (think 405win necked down)1

Thanks for the info guys most help full. Mt3030 if I am ever up that way I'll take ya up on the trout. I always heard the fishing up by you was great
