he's full of bull!!! why would a gun company want to get a bad name for them selves by making less than acurate guns just so it would be cheaper than a "gun shop gun"??  i would buy from wal mart and never look back if you lgs is higher in price. if he was a decant man, he'd match wal mart price or tell the truth!!!!!      good luck!! :D

Absolutely! I wouldn't buy air from that guy. WalMart gets their guns from a big distributor, Sports South (http://www.sportssouthinc.com/) and so do hundreds or even thousands of dealers. The guns are all the same.

I'm gonna make ya'll cry. I bought a Remington 700 in 22-250 on clearance at WallyWorld for $200 ($400 reg). On a good day 3 shots almost touch at 100 yards. On a bad day about 1" groups.

Yeah, kinda, but it is the big box stores like Wallys that caused the introduction of those high quality, reliable, accuate Remington Vipers, M710s adn similar junk.   Most LGS wouldn't carry them, and for good reason.  They are the WalMart specials.   :-D

Given todays society that seems to sue at the drop of a hat, there is NO WAY that a gun manufacturer is selling ANYTHING of "lesser quality"!!  They would be opening themselves up to law suits!  I have a brother in law that does business with Walmart, Bentonville...they get their prices by strong arming manufacturers...it's the golden rule...he who has the gold makes the rules.  That is how they get the price.  They negotiate with manufacturers and distributors to get a better price than everyone else, then they leverage their state of the art distibution systems to insure that they make money.

Buckslayer your lgs gets his rifles from the same distributer as walmart there is no difference, he just wants you to buy from him at his higher price. Its the same with ammunition  you can get a box og remington 30/06 for $11.00 from walmart and some lgs 's sell the same ammo for $17.99  Its all the same.

From what I have read elseware it pretty much comes down to volume that they buy in. Walmart along with any other large retail chain can sell the items for less due to the fact that they buy in such volumes that the manufactures and wholesaler often give them breaks on the price. If you think about it if you were to walk in to your lgs and buy 5 guns as opposed to just one don't you think he would give you a little bit of a price break? I know the ones around here would.

Also like 45/70fan I have also found deals like that too. 2 years ago I bought a Moss. 500 12 gauge combo with the 28 inch vent rib and a 24 inch slug bbl. for $135. When I asked the clerk he said it was because of the scratch on the stock. After a few minutes of looking I found about a .25 inch scratch on the stock just below the trigger guard. Of course I'm not much of a 12 guage fan and I already had 2 others I was inclined to sell it a couple of months later. After making my $100 profit I was almost ready to send walmart a thank you note.....almost. 8)

If Sports South has it in stock, it will take up to a week, less since you live closer to them than I do, that's how long it took on mine. You can  check inventory at their online inventory web site...use the Mega search at the bottom of the page, select H&R> long guns> Caliber from the drop downs. They don't list anything by NEF. Walmart's procedure, in short, is ordering it in layaway, putting 50% or more down, when they accept your money, and enter it in their system, it orders the firearm automatically.

you answered your own question with what you said about the 300 Win' mag.  i once looked at a beautiful - but abused - Ruger Super BlackHawk in a local gun shop.   when i told them the thing had been hotrodded the owner looked at the gunsmith (older man) with a questioning look.   the gunsmith was speechless.   i told them the cylinder end play was the clue.   i finally heard so much dumb stuff in that shop that i've stayed out of there -- and a couple of others -- ever since.

the gun mfr's are having such a hard time financially -- in several cases -- that they can't afford to sort out their production for his -n- hers models (good vs junk, in other words).   they can't do it.

i have own'd a couple of wally-world specials that will shoot with the best from many local gun shops.   so i buy wherever i am pleased with the service and the price.   IN N.E. OHIO WE HAVE A FEW GOOD GUNSHOWS.  I HAVE BOUGHT FROM GALLIPOLIS GUN AND ARCHERY.   PRICES AND SERVICE ARE EXCELLENT.   I RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE WHO GETS TO ONE OF THE SHOWS THEY ATTEND.   THEY ARE NOT FROM N.E. OHIO, HOWEVER.   THEY ARE FROM "DOWN ON THE RIVER".

good luck,

ss'

It must also be on "WalMart's List". WalMart does not buy all calibers. They make their deal with Sports South every year for only the ones the want to sell (For whatever reason???) For instance, Sports South has the 7.62X39 in stock but it's not on WalMart's List so I can't order it. But the lady at Sports South told me it will be on their list when the new list comes out in April and I can then order one through WalMart. Go figure.

Well, when I spoke to H&R CS a week or so ago, they said that Walmart orders some things special.
Question:  Why does the Youth model 20ga in the Wally World case have pistol grip stock?  The catalog shows that model with a squire stock.
CS answered that some things are ordered special.

When I stood the youth 20 and the adult 20 side by side on the counter, there was only about 3/4 inch difference in the LOP.  Just about the amount the difference would be if you took a stock with a recoil pad and replaced it with a butt plate and stood it next to one that was already cut to length for using on a Pardner that comes only with a butt plate.  Hope you all followed that.

So, yeah, they do get some things their way because of the volunm they do.

Hey huntnut, time to find a new lgs, he has lied to you once, or he is uninformed or just plain stupid, either way find someone else to deal with, not that I have formed an opinion of course :-D  :-D ....<><....

(and by the way, although I have purchased guns from Wal Mart I much prefer to buy from my lgs!!!)

Here we go again .

Myself being what some call a hardcore union member do not have a problem buying guns that are non union made in the U.S. but i Do have a problem buying guns that are made overseas when i can get one made here .

I do not like Walmart because of the way they treat their employees and the way they treat their suppliers .

Granted they fill a place in the market that some people need but i for one would gladly pay a few dollars more to get an American made product !

I have bought Hi-Points to plunk with just because they are made right here in Ohio . I buy H&R/NEF single shots because they are made in the U.S.

Huntnut, IMHO that's pure BS.

When a manufacturer engraves their name on a gun, they have bought into it lock, stock, and barrel - period.   I've heard this crap for about 35 years from small shop owners who simply can't compete with the big discounters.  What, do they expect you to believe there is any less liability or quality expectations because you bought it at Wally World vs. 'Joe's Local Gunshop?'

I worked part-time in a gunshop (during the 70's) where the owner, in frustration and total honesty, simply stopped stocking Remington and Winchester.  Why?  Because the local mega-discounter  (believe it was 'Best' at the time) was selling new guns at his dealer cost!  There was no difference in quality!

Dealers who claim 'less quality' are full of it.  Look around for an honest dealer.

Scrounger,
I don't know about your Wal-Mart for sure but at the one here, if the gun is in stock at SportsSouth they will order it for you. Have you asked the SG manager at your Wally to see if they can order the 7.62x39 for you? I bet they can. I don't seee why they would miss that opportunity to make a sell if they could get the gun. They should be able to order anything that SportSouth has in stock since it is their distributor.
