Projectile to build a gun around.
« on: May 29, 2006, 05:49:42 AM »
The pictures shown below are of a rare 3pdr. Whitworth shell. It is of hex bore. The shell had been turned into a bolt before firing by filling it with lead. It may (will) be a good size to build a gun around. A little reverse process, but...... This was an actual civil war projectile recovered in Florida.

I think I have the picture sizing thing figured out; if not , sorry. Here goes...

Pretty neat! I don't see why you wouldn't be able to build a gun around that, but why would you?

The Whitworth rifles were noted for their long range accuracy. A 3pdr.
Would allow you to have a Whitworth which did not require a special trailor and truck to haul it around. The 12pdr. barrel alone is 108" long.

Sometimes the end result is not the meaning of the hole project.
For me this would entail manufacturing the tooling to cut the hex bore.(you dont just pop out to Production tool and pick em up.) Making a rifling machine for same, cutting the breech thread ect. I find great satisfaction making and designing my own tooling, doing the work and having it turn out looking like it's is suppose to. The real thing.

Besides, if nothing else, it cuts down on the amount of time that I sit in front of this thing and the tv!

Have a nice holiday.

Quite a challenge.  Do you have a horizontal milling machine with an indexing head so you can make more projectiles?  That seems like it would be more of a problem than rifling the bore once.

GG, Iam deep in another project right now and  have not given it all due consideration.but, first thought is rifle an extra long length using the excess to make the mold. maybe split it shim it and with 2 end caps. 4pc.
