P220 Shooting Way High
« on: January 30, 2006, 02:10:31 PM »
I was curious to see what you guys think.  This past weekend, I got a good chance to see just where my Sig P220ST was shooting on paper.  I found out it was going about a foot and one-half high at 20-25yds. shooting off-hand.  My current load is 5.7gr of 231, CCI Lg. Pistol, and 230gr. Rainier plated RNs.  The sights on the gun are fixed, but I was wonderin' if it was possible to get them bullets to go where the sights are.  I don't like having to hold around a foot lower than my intended target area.

Shooting out to 100yds. is no problem with where they are; just hold it right on. :P

Thanks.

I believe the front sight is dovetailed. You need a higher front sight. Brownells has a formula. If you are really 18" high at 25 yds, that means increasing the height of the front sight about .12 inches. Get a front sight higher than that and file to fit.

Tom C., you're right about it being dovetailed.  I'll take a look at some different front sights out there and see what I can find out.  Thanks alot for you're input; I never really thought long or hard enough to think about it that way.  I'm pretty sure a higher front sight will fix the issue.  I guess it will also require that I make sure the load I'm using is the one I want to stick with from now on.  Or I could get fancy and buy a pile of front sights; then label them according to the load they've been tailored to.

I agree with Tom C.  I think a taller front sight will resolve your problem.  :D

Very unusuall for a Sig to shoot so far off the sights. I'd put it on a good rest at a meausred distance and shoot it again. Then measure the sight error before you start changing anything. An adjustable sight would be a nice addition to a P-220 for range use-----

I am with Savage on this one.  I would bench the pistol first and make sure it was really that high.  Is this a new gun or used. If after re-checking everything you find it is still high, I would give Sig a call.

I have two and have been around a good number of them in my work. I have never seen a Sig P220 shoot that high out of the box.

I purchased my first one for a duty weapon, as the government would not allow the use of a single action auto, (1911) for duty.  I have had great luck with the gun.  With about any good 230 grn load, it  shot  dead on at 25 yards right out of the box.  The second gun needed a small windage adjustment, but the height was good. I carried the first every day for many years until some genuis in Washington decided we all needed to use the issue weapon, a 9mm at that time.

There is hardly any finish left on that gun and I wouldn't even hazard a guess as to how many thousand rounds she has fired.  It's never been broke or repaired and has never let me down. It's still pulling duty in my retirement, as  my go to  town gun.  :D

Savage, I'll give it a try on a bench next time I'm "home on the range."  I remember giving it a try on a bench about a year and a half ago, but I couldn't remember now where it was shooting.  Do you have any web information on getting an adjustable sight for it?  Sounds like an interesting idea.  I would like to read more about that to see if that may be a good way to go.

Skeeterbaymac,  I have had it for almost 3 years now.  Excellent pistol, and have no regrets saving a while for it.  I just noticed recently it was shooting higher than the sights.  Perhaps because recently I've been paying more attention to where exactly it is shooting.  If I were in L.E., I would definitely attempt to have a P220 riding with me.  It has performed extremely well through a few thousand rounds so far.  I'll be sure to check things out further before I decide to do anything with the sights.

I'll post a report on it after the next range session.

:D Patriot.  ButlerFord offerd some sound advice on contacting Customer Service for assistnace in solving the problem.  But first I would take it to the range with some factory ammo and shoot a few rounds off the bench.  Save a target and send it to Sig if you have to send it back for service.  They will shoot it, but your targer will give them some idea of how the gun is performing for you.

I own several Sigs, all shot great out of the box, even the two used ones shot great.  Did you buy new or used?

Patriot,
Just about everyone makes adjustable sights for the Sigs these days, here is a link to some pretty fair ones:
