How often do you guys hear that comment?  I hear it all the time at work. Some people would ask my why I would kill bambi, and they  will say while eating a hamburger, or ham sandwich.

I've heard it more than a few times.  Also comments about trapping, or killing any poor defensiless animal.  I then point out their leather belts, shoes, wallets, and purses.

I never hear it orally.  Perhaps it's the company I keep.
However, every hunting season, the paper publishes a letter-to-the-editor from one of "them".  I think that they do that just to elicit a flood of counter-responses!

Maybe I don't handle the subject like the delicate flower it is, but whenever I hear some snot-nosed fruit say: "Oh, are you going to kill Bambi?"

I always say: "Yes.  And the little b*stard deserves to die."

Good Said FW!     One year we were having a lunchion at the orginazation where I worked.  We had two young women that were constantly crying about all those poor animals that were being killed by hunters.  One of the older women was tired of their constant whinning about hunting and their anti retorick.  Connie made up signs to place over all the dishes.  My stew was labeled Bullwinkle stew, then there was Bambi steaks, Charlamain pieces(Chicken), Wilber chops(pork), and a few others I don't remember.  The two young women left and never attended another one of our parties.  We really missed them.

Ask them if they like bambi burgers, or rudolph roast. My cousin used to work with a bunch of city folk. He was eating his lunch one day and some woman asked him what kind of meat he was eating. She literally freaked when he told her it was squirrel. The whole office gave him fits over killing a poor lil squirrel. The next week end he killed some more and skinned out the heads. He cooked them and took them to work. He ate them in front of the old biddies that had given him fits, making plenty of yummy sounds as he relished his delicacy. He said it was so nice being left alone to eat in peace. POWDERMAN.  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

:D I think most of the people that make such comments are "city folks" with little or no exposure to the outdoors.  It is about 22 miles from my home to my place in the country.  Rarely do I make this drive that I don't see at least three dead deer on the road.  I have been witness to several autos hitting deer and have seen the damage to the vehicle and injuries to the passengers.  One son-in-law was almost killed when a tractor trailor hit a deer and flipped it into the opposit lane where he hit it.  He was injuries in the accident and almost lost his eye sight.

Hunting is about the only way to balance nature, since the big cats and wolves are gone.  Left alone, the deer would out number the people in a few years.  Hummm......that doesn't sound bad if you likes to shoot em.

I try to ignore them as much as possible, but they just dont go away. I agree, too many of them are Disneyized as kids and dont grow out of it as adults. The more of them I meet, the more I miss my dog.

first question I ask back is "are you a vegetarian?" I've only had one "yes" and I just congratulated her for not bein a HYPOCRITE......people tend to forget that to have a burger something has to DIE

best thing to do is to enlighten them as to how many animal products they use, because the more they realize that they profit from animals expiring, the more they are likely to shut up and let me hunt in PEACE :D

Hope this topic isn't "dead" yet.  There is some interesting reading on the net regarding "Bambi, A Life in the Woods".

I always reply; "Did you read the book?"
Quote
Bambi is a classic coming-of-age novel, following a deer from birth (the name is based on the Italian bambino, meaning baby) to adulthood, realistically depicting the danger and harshness of nature...
The book describes in GREAT DETAIL the harrowing death of a sparrow by a hawk in the first few pages as well as other natural "hazards" that didn;t make it into the Disney movie.

IMO it does not make a good impression when we taunt the misinformed.  Our best offense is to make use of the truth.

On another interesting site http://www.hanrei-usa.net/disporiginal.php?precedentid=20 the copyright infringement of the 1923 Felix Salten book by Walt Disney is shown to be remanded
Quote
to the court to the district court for further proceedings
where the judgement goes from there I have not discovered.

The Disney Corporation earned a great deal of money through the film and through the sale of a wide variety of products related to the film, including the book in republished form with Disney illustrations. Salten, who died in 1945, earned very little in the arrangement.

Salten's daughter Anna (Wyler), however, who inherited Salten's holdings and renewed the copyright in 1954, entered into more satisfactory arrangements with the Disney Corporation. After her death the rights passed to her husband who sold the rights to an organization named Twin Books. Twin Books, in turn, feeling that it was owed more than the Disney company would give, brought Disney to court. At that time, Disney brought out that the copyrighted publication of 1926 was, in fact, not the first publication. Felix Salten had published the story earlier in 1923, but in that original publication had not included a copyright notice. Disney, thus claimed that the book entered into the public domain in 1923. Disney further claimed that even if the 1923 publication were found to be protected, that Disney had the rights anyway as Ms. Wyler had not renewed the copyright until 1954 which would be after the deadline if the 1923 origination date were found to be valid. The court upheld the Disney claim.

In 1996 however, on appeal, the Ninth Circuit Court reversed the decision.

I disagree.  People who are willfully ignorant should be treated as such, and often.

My reaction to the Bambi statement is intended to shock them and make the people realize what kind of person Salten was.

When someone asks," Did you shoot Bambi?' My standard reply is ," Did you know that Felix Salten, the author of Bambi was a child pornographer."

That will usually widen the eyes a lot. I remember reading an article about this whole Bambi thing and someone did some research into Salten. He wrote a book about some teen prostitute. I want to say it was titled,"Josephine" .

I then add, why did he write a child's story? Was he trying to lure in kids. Again, most people never heard that and go away quite shocked.

i've heard
"you have guns?! and you kill animals with them??!!"
to which i reply; "only the cute little fluffy ones"
the best was when i mentioned one of my rifles was the originally carried by my great grandfather in WW1. "oh did he kill bambi with it as well"
"nope, only krauts"
" oh we didn't sink the bismarck, and we didn't fight at all, we spent our time in Norfolk and we really had a ball. chasing after women while our ship was overhauled, living it up on grapefruit juice and sick bay alcohol"

Now while I should be offended by the city slicker comments, having lived in the chicago area all my life ( not too happy about it lately). I hunt with a couple of good ol' boys and they made me an honerary redneck so I can let it go. Unfortunately, I know exactly what you guys mean. The last thing I need is some self righteous vegamanarian reading me the riot act over my venison burger. the last time anyone said anything to me, I just responded " Yes I killed Bambi, that's what he gets for being born delicious!"

I would also like to agree with the Walt Disney comment. All those kiddie movies have them believing animals can talk and have better morals than we evil humans do. And that just ain't right.

i've had people ask me how i could kill bambi os many times. the answer that i use the most is to just look them dead in the eye and say that i've never shot a vcr or dvd player in my life. most of the time they just look at me all confused. there are a few other also.

when I get the bambi question I simply say no I killed Bambi years ago. Now I am after all his other relatives. Then I politely explain that my hunting is more ethical then what the slaughter houses do to animals so they can buy it in the store. Then I use the peta line I say I belong to PETA  people eating tasty animals. By then they usually go away. I also sometimes use the Ted Nugent line killing an animal is no different than hiring an asssasin to do it for you. Not everyone needs to kill ot hunt but they need to admit when they eat their big steak something did die for it
