A burning question

I have a 44 mag super 14. I tried IMR 4227 and 180 gr. Hornady HP. The IMR 4227 shot very dirty. I then tried H110. The report and the recoil told me that it was a more powerfull load. But the H110 burned just a little dirty also. The H110 was a very accurate load. My question is do I accept the slighty dirty burning H110 or try another powder. If I try another powder what powder would you folks suggest I try.

Give WW296 a try, Your load should be on the heavy side because this powder is to be loaded at 80% to 90% case capacity to burn correctly. Always Follow your loading data, Give this a try,

I think you'll have a hard time getting H-110 or W-296 to burn clean using a 180 gr bullet in a 44 mag. You really need at least a 240, but better yet 270-300 gr to get the slow powders to burn clean.
You might want to try something a little faster like 2400.

If you are not already doing it a fairly heavy crimp may help. I agree with Paul too, the lite bullet is a factor. H110 and WW296(same powder) need some resistance to get the fire going. GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt :-D

I use AA #9 for the lighter bullets, and Lil' Gun for the heavey ones.

I will give you my opinion for what it is worth. I use 240 gr XTP's with magnum primers. I am currently experimenting with 296 for the same reason you are. I have come to the following conclusion. The IMR 4227 is more accurate in my gun. The 4227 has way less noise and recoil. I think the 296 is just a dirty or worse than 4227. The 4227 leaves the grains of unburnt in the barrel but the barrel does not seem as sooty as the 296.
For all the reasons mentioned, I am switching back to 4227. Now if I can just make my 41 Mag shoot with the 4227.

Hey,OLDMAN try H-110 with a good crimp and CCI Mag. primers.H-110 is hard to burn you need the crimp.

Thanks for all of you who replied. PJ, I have a die set that roll crimps and I roll crimp into the canalure. The choice of powder could be the problem. I use large pistol magnum primers so I think all is ok there. I do put a lot of stock in the fellow who said that the 180 gr. bullet may be to light for the H110. I will try some 265 gr. this week end although I only have 7 bullets. I have 15 300 gr Hornady HP and I will try them this week end also. I have a feeling the heavier bullets will work. If not I will be posting another question soon. Thanks for all of your replies and I think the answer to my dirty burning lies in the replies that you folks were kind enough to send. The H110 was so darn accurate that I just hated to abandon it.
