Long Range Loads

Hello fellow shooters,

I've been thinking about what long range loads I could try in my 300 Weatherby, and wanted to spew a couple ideas that came into my head for your opinions.  I anticipate shooting on paper from 250yds.+.

My first consideration would be a 200gr. Sierra HPBT Match bullet from 2700-2900fps. Does that seem like enough to properly stabilize that bullet at longer ranges?

My second was a 220gr. Sierra HPBT Match at around 2600-2750fps or so. What about those numbers in regards to bullet stability? My bbl. is 26" with a 1-in-10" ROT.

Are these bullets well suited for my cartridge and intentions?

Ooookaaaay......Are there any resources I can look up on the web that might have in depth information for using magnums coupled with generally sleek, heavy for caliber bullets?  Perhaps a forum somewhere out there dedicated to long range paper-punching?

Or if you're one of those lurker types who has some ideas and tips, but is waiting to see if someone else will touch the subject first, I'm stayin' up waitin' to hear something from ya.  :coffee: zzzzzzzzzzzzz.....

patriot your velocity is certainly doable.I am not sure why you want to beat your self up shooting that cannon but it is YOUR shoulder.The Sierra 200 gr spitzer sighted at 400 yards will drop almost 16" at 500 & 240" at 1000. At 200 it will be 10.5" high.This with a muzzle velocity of 2800 fps.
  You could squeeze another 200 fps from the gun and get a little flatter trajectory,(+8-9" @200 and -205"@1000) The 220 mk is about as good or slightly better at 2900 fps muzzle velocity.Zeroed at 400 yards you will get +9.4@200 and _208.5 @ 1000.I hope you have a decent range to play at these ranges,and the optics also. Thanks for your reply.  As for your reference about it being a cannon and all, I agree.  It is.  But I don't shoot it often enough and I would like to get more range time with it.  There is something about that big'un that is just plain fun to shoot.  Reason 2: I shoot my 308 way more than I ought to; so much that I feel I do injustice to my other rifles.  

The range I shoot at has covered positions and I can shoot steel or paper out to 600yds. 1000yd. shoots are held from time to time; it would likely be a while before I feel comfortable shooting that far.

I don't have any intent of using the MKs for hunting.  I have some good loads worked up with 180gr. Barnes TSXs.  Optics are covered as well.  The scope I have sitting on it now is a Leupold Vari-X III 6.5-20x50mm. with a Mil-dot reticle.

Partiot you could go to Sniper Hide and tlak to those guys for more info on long range loads.  I don't know much personally, but those guys do.  They probably haven't done much with a 300 weatherby, but there are a couple guys who shoot 300 win mags at long range.  These guys shoot alot and know alot too so give them a try.

any mag 30 cal is not a 250 yards gun (its much more like 1000) i know you want to shoot it more but its really over kill get a 223 (your shoulder will thank me). now the 300 Weatherby is still over kill if you ask me so's the 300 winny if you go above the 308/30-06 in the target world you should just go up to the 338.




one thing to remember if you do start shooting that beast is to watch your barrel life caz your burning a lot of powder.
