7mm WSM or 270 Win?
« on: December 13, 2005, 01:11:28 PM »
I have a chance to get a 7mm WSM in a Howa Lightning or a Stainless Wood Stock Hunter in A 270 Win. Anyone here reload for the 7mm? I heard it really is a tough one to load for. I love the 270 and know what it is capable of.

Can't help with the 7mm WSM but will say that I just bought 270 WSM and found a good handload right of the bat. Think I'm going to like this cartridge

I would try the 7mm WSM.  Here's a hint for reloading:  pay attention to the new Sierra reloading manual, and if you have questions, contact a guy named Paul Box.

He is a Ballistics Tech there, and has developed the loads for the 7mm.  I have used other loads in the 25-06 and 30-06 that he developed, and they have all been on the money.  My development time, when using his data, is next to nothing.  I can guarantee that a 140 gr. BTSP or a 160 gr. HPBT will be more than adequate for deer or elk, respectively.

The other source for load development I would use is the Hornady manual.  If you want a "tougher" bullet for the 140 gr., use their 7mm 140 gr. Interbond.  Load development is longer, but I haven't seen a major difference in accuracy between the Sierra and Hornady products once load development is worked out.

I don't think that you could go wrong with either a 7mm WSM or a .270 Win. - but I would lean towards the 7mm WSM.

I had a Rem 700 action and Hart put on a 24" light hunting barrel and  mcmillan stock, weight 6.7lbs
Bought 140gr nosler BT & 140 gr Partitions and some Lost River 140 gr
i have had many guns made up over the years, benchrest, hunting etc
But this 7mmwsm is just plain amazing with 4831 and 140gr BT to test for a load to hunt got .125" 3 shot group at 3200fps tryed the partitions at 200yards .480 and I zerro it at 300yards to hunt last fall, shot a 200lb deer at 390 yards it was just plain instant kill. Tryed other powders magpro & wxr they where very good also. I see a load with 140gr Lostrivers at 3300fps very flat shooting bullet 644BC on the 140 gr
These short stubby cartridges are the way to go they just seem to shoot very well, go to www.shortmags.com lots of info on the wsm.
I am pretty sure if this cartridge had been brought out in 1902 just ahead of the 06, you would not be hearing anthing about .270win,.280,25/06 today.

and on and on.

270 vs 7wsm

Anthony; I've been reloading 7wsm for deer/elk for a couple of years now ,and have not been able to produce a load the Wally World Black Shadow didn't really like.  I'm not a bench shooter, but it'll keep TBBC's; Interbonds; and Speer BTSP's in a 1 inch to 1.5 inch group at a hundred yards consistently.  I'm quite confident that a skilled shooter could easily do much better than me on paper.  Couple of qwerks about the reload process; Gotta trim off a little on the RCBS powder funnel or you'll have a powder spill on the bench. (short neck=big shoulder syndrome) Secondly; they take a funky box to put 'em in, but it's easy to come by.
Another consideration: Rifle magazine typically will only take 2 rounds so if you're into flock shootin', might not be the way to go.  Could be an issue in the future regarding ammo availability 'cause of current parent company issues, and the fact that the 7 is the least popular of the wsm's.  My take: easy to load for; good horsepower; drops elk when loaded with TBBC's like lightening  Either way good choices! Good shooting!! :toast:

How do the WSM's feed relative to the standard 270 Winchester?  I would think the older cartridge would feed smoother.  Other than that if you do not reload the old 270 is a heck of a lot cheaper to shoot.  I am not quite sold on the WSM's I am sure they are fine and variety is the spice of life, maybe one day I will get the .325 WSM just for the fun of it.

My Winchester Super Shadow 270 WSM , feeds very well, more accurate than the 4 270's I have owned. Shoot one someday...................you'll understand.
