still cleaning my M70=rust on a jeweled bolt
« on: February 05, 2006, 07:06:35 PM »
I got an old, but NIB, M70 WalMart special.  I got the Loctite cleaned out of the bolt lug area.  My problem now is rust on the bolt itself.  Is there a nonabrasive way to remove rust without removing the bluing on the bolt handle and safety?

removing fine rust on bluing

All I can suggest is to use a mildly abrasive material that will NOT harm the blue.  Try a brass brush or some brass wool and oil.  Wipe and rub, and wipe off the rust residue (it is abrasive too).  If the rust is really fine, a few minutes should be enough to remove the redness without hurting the good blue.

I use 0000 steel wool and WD40. Rubbing lightly with plenty of WD40 wipe often to check progress. This will remove some blue but the rust first.  Usually if the blue is damaged it was already damaged by the rust,, so it's OK.. Touch up any blue damage/wear with a cold blue. I much prefer Brownells OxphoBlue in the liquid..

Dang, I didn't think about Flitz.  I have a tube by the fridge.  Will try that and the steel wool/ WD40.  Might have a brass bristle brush in the tool box.....My the jewelling looks really nice.  The rust isn't on any blued area.  My concern about the blueing was that I couldn't just dunk it in CLR or some other acidic stuff.  It is really fine pin-prick type rust, can't see fingerprints, but it is on opposing sides of the bolt so probably is.

A brass bristle brush with some CLP worked for me. The CLP is penetrating oil so you shouldn't see the rust come back unless abused.

Used some Flitz on the bottom of bolt (when closed).  Mirror like shine, but it took out some of the jewelling.  Oh, well, at least no rust.  Will try the CLP on the other spot.  Why does CLP have to smell so bad.  Smells like spoiled milk or something.
