SP-10
« on: September 26, 2005, 05:28:02 AM »
Got a SP-10 last year. bought it just for goose hunting. have had nothing but trouble out of this gun. First the barrel started to rust thru the camo finish. Stayed at Rem Fac. for about all last goose season. Opening day this year I was stuck with a 1200.00 single shot. Would not cycle at all. Carried back again and the gunsmith did't know why so sent back to rem again. Done lost another goose season looks like. Has anyone had this kind of problem out of the sp-10. My choice is now to have 1200.00 credit at this gun store to get whatever I what or a new sp-10. I will not accept this gun back. I really what the sp-10, but if a lot of yall are having the same problem I may just have to go with something else. reply quickly. that 1200.00 is burning.LOL

recieved sp-10 back from Rem. NO CHANGE They say that they replaced the gas piston. Talked back to gun store and my opptions now are to  try a new sp-10, get a brning gold 10 or store credit for what ever.  I would really like to have a functionable sp-10 and would opt for this if I knew that this was a fluke. I really need some feedback from other sp-10 owners so I can make up my decision. Thanks, DM

i really like my browning gold hunter. its a 20 gauge but i think if this one is any indication of the quality of browning guns, i would buy another in a heartbeat. and btw if you go that route you can get a few hundred bucks back on it...plus they have the 100 dollar rebate until the end of october i believe.

This reminds me of the old lemon story from car manufacturers,

The sp-10 is a excellent gun, reliable as heck!  But it just comes down to statitics.  Even under the best conditions, best products in, best quality their is always a percentage that are not going to be excellent.  Their are always going to be flaws and some that will be  lemons.  I think we can all agree the Benelli super black eagle is an excellent shot gun.  Well I has a friend that had nothing but trouble with a brand new one and ended up buying another just like it and was fine.  I would probably suggest the same.  :D

Oh, sheet, I already have one! A field grade 686.  Love it to pieces. Duh, now I need like $2400 to upgrade  to something I shouldn't put in my truck!  8)
The point is, Remington forgot how to make shotguns about 20 years ago. Standing on thier reputation has only cost them a huge following of users, and now those users offspring.

DM, I would give the Remmy another chance since that is what you really wanted in the first place.

I just bought a used SP-10 and took it to the field the day after I got it. Once over and no cleaning and it functioned perfectly. Granted, it wasn't typical goose weather  (temps in the high 80's) but it went boom and cycled everytime I yanked the trigger.

I've never shot a Browning and I'm sure they have a good product but I REALLY love this SP-10.

If SP-10 number two fails as well, then you have a good reason to give the Browning a whirl. Choose quickly, goose season is here.

Good luck in your decision.

I've got an SP-10 with probably a couple thousand rounds through and it's the most reliable auto I own.  Not one hiccup or jam.  Maybe you just got a lemon.

Thanks guys. My NEW SP-10 will be in Thur. or Fri.

I bought this gun mainly to goose hunt with. Lost most of last season and all of this season so far.

Hopfully no more lemon juice.

dancoman, well, how's the new SP-10?

Did the new Remington perform or what?

Are you ready to be a Browning man?

Details man we want details.

Hope your goose season was salvaged...

What's the odds of two lemons. The new sp-10 wouldn't cycle either. Went and bought a new box of shells and same thing. They cycle fne by hand, and I am wondering if the spring in the stock in a little to stiff. I swear I thought about trimming it to see if that would help. Just by feel, thats the only thing I can figure, unless it's gas related. All that is cleaned and clear.
The gun store owner said that he ate the other and that this puppy was mine to deal with. Guess I will call Rem myself and hash it out.

Still wondering what a replacment spring would cost!!!!!

ANYTHING ANYONE

Thanks, DM

Sorry to hear you're having problems. I duck/goose hunt with a cousin and uncle who both use SP-10's and they don't have any problems.

Could it be an ammo issue?

Have you tried different makes of ammo? Somewhere in my short amount of reading about the SP-10, it was reported that some of them didn't like the Remington ammo. I use Winchester Supremes and Federal brand shells in mine. I did use a few Remingtons but found no issues with them.

I hope you get it worked out.

Have tried all three- Unless I'm really snakebite it's not ammo related.

What surprises me most here is that the gun shop owner swallowed a $1200 gun for you!  Most shops will sell it to you and maybe send it back to the manufacturer for you, but that is about it.  Once they have your money, you are typically stuck with what you got, be it good or bad.

The second SP-10 is fine. Turned out to be nothing at all. When first got I cleaned real well and shot out my gun room window. Was not putting enough resistance to allow the gun to cycle. Figured this out when I finally took the gun outside and backed er up to a tree and the spent shell went about 25 ft. After this I called a rem gunsmith and he said that there are starting to be more and more complanits of not cycling, mainlly due to the new and improved recoil reducing systems.
Did get to shoot a few geese this year with it. No problems at all shootin from the shoulder. Lookin forward to bustin some serious goose hind end next year. DM

Glad to see all is well in SP-10 land for you Dan.

Might look to replace the butt-pad on mine soon. It's old and a bit stiff from age. Might try to find some synthetic stocks for it as well.

Any recomendations for either butt-pads or synthetic stocks for the SP-10?

I did get to bust a few ducks last week with the new sp-10. Shot Like a dream. I do believe I'm "Good To Go".

Nix, the R3 would be my choice. Have a R3 (or Simms) on about eight guns including a 300RUM. They do make a differance.

Good luck,DM

ps- can't wait until early september, if ya know what I mean!!!!!!

pss- talked to Briley and got a catalog for differant tubes for the sp-10
need one a little more open than what came with it for duckin

psss- I hate steel shot

Nice Pic Ray.

I'm bad about havin the wife or son drop me off up river  and float back to house. My first outin brought in 6 ducks and a goose.

Had acouple more floats they were jst as much fun but only killed afew ducks each trip.

the next to last day a buddy of mine and myself  took a float and ended up with 11 ducks including 2 banded mallards. (I was lucky enough to have been the one that got to shoot them).

Have you ever tried floatin,  DM

Hav'nt really tried to pattern for the ole long beards. Where I do mst of my turkey huntin, there's a lot of walking. Have an 870 set up for that. It's light and pattens as good as it get's with the win 31/2 #5. Right now the ole 870 is 5birds from 4 shots.
Sp-10 may get a go when I get my new tubes in, if I don't have to carry it much.
