Was out shooting this morning and was shooting one of my sportierized Swedish Mausers. This is a rifle I have a couple 100 rounds through with no problems. Was shooting a new mild load of 140gr Rem PSP's. 1st three shots went off with out a problem. However on shot 4 there felt like 2 stages of the firing pin going forward and a noticable delay of the round going off. Bolt opened okay, recoil felt normal, but the case was extremely dirty and there was carbon all over the rim area of the case and the bolt face is very dirty as well. Any thoughts out there as to what happened? Never had it happen before.

Cappy ,that sounds like a "squib"load. Check that case against the others to see if it has more capacity.Also was the load below reccommended minimum level?The swede action is rated for about 45,000psi so be carefull loading it up. Was the powder old,primers?Was the primer pierced?.

Sounds like the case didn't have enough expansion, allowing the gas to leak past. That's the usual cause of sooty cases.

Is there any reason as to why a case wouldn't have enough expansion?

partial powder charge ignition, weak powder charge or not properly annealed brass..

Any of the above could cause that. I'd lean towards the first two..

Any chance the primer flash hole was plugged with cleaning media?

I'd say your really lucky; sounds like you were treading awful close to a S.E.E. (Secondary Explosian Effect). If the "new mild load" was with a slow burning powder I would suggest you shooot them no more.

Thanks for the replies guys. The load wasn't that "mild"....4grs above min and a couple below max, depending on what load manual you use it is actually above max. (42grs H414). Going to go out and try some loads that are already made up and have worked flawlessly in the past, 38gr Varget under 100gr Hornady. If those go through no problem, I loaded up a few more 140gr with 43gr H414 and lowered the COL slightly from the max of 3.1 down to 3.05 and will give them a try.

Of course the rifle will be secured in a vise, I'll be hiding behind the truck and a string will be going to the trigger :lol: :lol: :-D :-D

I agree with sgtt. I think you had some media in the flash hole. Primer went off, no hole for flash to go, so it blew out around the primer. Partial flash then slowly ignited the powder, but since weak flame, did not accelerate powder burn as fast as normal so did not produce pressures like normal loads.

Double, triple check those flash holes.

YOu did check your barrel to make sure the bullet isn't stuck inside?
