454 casull
« on: February 08, 2006, 12:05:22 PM »
The other day I was give some information from an  DNR employee that is leading me to need another barrel in "magnum handgun caliber", so I am leaning to a 454 casull for deer hunting (hopefully)

If I can not find a used one on trade. I will be ordering a 12 or 15 inch encore 454 casull  from bullberry barrels.

So I want some information

what load do you people  use out of yours?
will this barrel need a  6 hole scope base?
How bad will it kick with full power loads? It will not have a break
does yours shot well with cast bullets?
how does it shoot 45 long colt?

To answer your questions. I have one but just sent it to be rechambered to the 460 Mag.

what load do you people  use out of yours?
I was using 35 gr. of H 110 with a 260 gr. Nosler Partition.

will this barrel need a  6 hole scope base?
I am using a Warne mount and have had no problems at all.

How bad will it kick with full power loads? It will not have a break
I found the recoil to be stout with no break, my 460 is going to have a break.

does yours shot well with cast bullets?
I shot a lot of 260 gr. hard cast bullets and it was very accurate.

how does it shoot 45 long colt?
My 454 Casull shot the 45 colts well. They were 6 inches lower than my 454 Casull rounds though. But the gun was sighted in for the Casull rounds.

Here is what I remember from my 454 Encore.  Sorry, I destroyed the load data a while back so that I didn't get it confused with my Ruger SRH data.  Mine was a 12".  I find that 10-12" about right for myself.   I would opt for that length range, since I believe that a 15" might really be hard to control with that quick snap.

what load do you people  use out of yours?

I used a Hornady 300 grain XTP with a near max load of W296 for hunting.  Titegroup also did some good things for less tha max loads.

will this barrel need a  6 hole scope base?

I had a standard 4 hole base on mine.  I used 3 rings on a Leupold 4X scope.  The rings were Warne.  I don't know if I needed the 3rd ring, but I felt better doing it.  :)

How bad will it kick with full power loads? It will not have a break

It definitely got your attention with the 296 loads, but wasn't bad once you get the feel for it.  I noticed it more at the bench.

does yours shot well with cast bullets?

Never used them in the Encore or my SRH.

how does it shoot 45 long colt?

Never shot them in the Encore, since I could load the 454 down enough to be in the ballpark of the 45 LC.
