GunStocks-Inc opinions..

What do you guys think of GunStockInc's Handi wood?

I'm debating on whether to get the high roll-over or the thumbhole and the long target forearm in walnut.

EDITED FOR BAD LINK: knight0334

For those that have either, or any of their other products, how was their fit and finish?  Marbling/character in the walnut?  How much prep work was involved with finalizing the wood?   I like alot of marble and character..

I dont have much experience working with wood short of nailing 2x4's together for sheds.  ...but I want something other then what our friends at NEF/H&R provides.

Someone here has a scoped BC with the high-roll over from them that I fell in love with and made my desktop background.

Also quicktdoo had a set that he never got around to finnishing and wanted to trade ,do not know if he still has them or not .

Tried to do a search but it seems to be not working right now.

I think you're right, it was mac's BC.  I still have a copy of that pic in my PC at home somewhere.

Yes,  quickdtoo has a set..  ...well at least had a set til just a couple mins ago.

I just scarf'd them up.

I'm really psych'd up right now.  Gonna order the .223 Ultra 24" bull/heavy rifle today at lunch for this wood to go on.

I also have something going on with reamer and die manufacturers for a rechambering of it.    And, the outside of the barrel itself might get some sides added to it in my uncle's machine shop.   Then to top it off,  I'm gonna flute the flats of the side.

I just haven't decided on which to rechamber to.

Just got back from the local gun shop.  New rifle should be in this week..  I did end up paying about $40 more then what Wally World asks, but it keeps the local guy in business.  ...which we're down to only 2 shops within 30 miles(not counting one snob-shop).  I'm sure I can pawn off the laminated stocks that I'm getting to help offset price difference.

====

Mac,

That Ultra you have is down right pretty.  Thats the luster/shine I'm gonna be shooting for when I finish my set.

====

Tim,

Thank you again for the good deal.

====
stimpylu32,

I'm waiting on a reply from SSK Industries on whether or not they will do my rechamber.    ..then weighing the pro's & con's of all the above.

I already have .225 Win brass from my Hornet converted to 225 Win setup..   Fireforming some out to 225 AI or 226 JDJ will be a simple process.

I'm pretty sure you can stop waiting on the reply from SSK, I've spoken to JD personally on this matter and he told me they wouldn't rechamber NEFs. So unless they've changed their policy they will not do it.

Gunstocks, Inc. is a sponsor on this site. Nice folks to do business with and the stocks they provided for our prairie dog shoot last year were sure nice looking pieces. Several folks on here have them.

Thanks for the heads-up, Graybeard.   ..I guess I can scratch the .226 JDJ.

That does make the choice a little easier.

Tim,

Your M.O. is in the USPS company outbox for tomorrow morning.  I cant see any reason why you shouldn't have it by Thurs, maybe Friday at latest.

I believe that BC with the Gunstocks, Inc rollover Monte Carlo was Stuffit's.  He used a satin finish that looked real nice.

I have one on a .204 Handi that was presented to me by all of the prairie dog shooters last year.

Here is the original rifle:

Here it is after I finished the stock:

I have since sanded it back down and put a more satin finish on it.  I never could get the glossy stuff to set up hard enough.

I would definately recommend these stocks to anyone.

Wlscott,

What did you use to finish that with?  ...mind you I'm a complete moron when it comes to wood finishing.

Hey Knight, what are you going to do with the stocks that came off that gun? I see you said something about pawning them off, would you be interested in a swap? I need another set of MonteCarlos....<><.... :grin:

I used Tung Oil Finish, then a product called "Linspeed" which is basically linseed oil with solvent added.

But, I couldn't get the Linspeed to set up hard enough, so I ended up redoing it with the tung oil finish, then just a satin varnish.

Go to the link that Mitchell provided for all the steps I went through.

Good luck.  It's a lot of work.
