50-110 express smokeless loads?
« on: April 17, 2003, 03:45:25 PM »
I know, I know, this is a blackpowder forum but this bunch seems so knowledgeable that I just have to ask if anyone has load info for this beast.  It is an original Winchester barrel on a 71 Browning action.  Am using the 450 grain flat point bullet and gettilng acceptable accuracy with 86 grains of Goex ffg but would like to try some low pressure smokeless if I can find info.

Go to the Accurate Arms powder web site.  I believe they have information on that cal using their excellent XMP 5744 powder.  I have used it in my 45-70 and also my 45-110 with very good results.  Good Luck!! :D Omaha

Smitty,
GB said this forum could discuss smokeless. Please note there is a separate forum for the BP cartridge only folks.
There are many powders that could be used but little tested data is available. I hope you know that you probably can't use a case full of any smokeless in these large rounds. Because of their great powder capacity it is easy to double charge if you get careless. I would also be concerned if your rifle is an original BP rifle. One of the other readers may have an index to Handloader Magazine and may be able to find some data.
I have used 5744 in several .45/70s and I have found that it does not burn as clean as SR4759.
