270 coyote load?
« on: February 15, 2006, 06:52:36 AM »
I'm going to pick up my new encore 270 pistol this week and need some loads for coyotes. I used to load 90gr hp and 110gr v-max for my 270 savage with good luck. Should I stick to them or does anyone have good loads for the 15" 270? I was going to get a burris scope for it but just dont have the funds right now what do you guys think about the simmons prohunter 2-6x32?

There is nothing wrong with the lighter bullets fired out of a 15" barrel.  The heavier bullets are more efficient, but the 90-110 grain bullets will work fine.

I hesitate to recommend the Simmons handgun scopes.  Over a decade ago, Simmons offered a 2x7 handgun scope which was so good that JD Jones of SSK recommended it for his handcannons.  I almost didn't believe him as I had two previous Simmons handgun scopes fail prior to that, but I broke down and got a new one.  It is a fine, rugged scope although its optics aren't on the level of Burris or Leupold.  The fly in the ointment is that Simmons has changed a lot since then and they are now a part of the Meade Group.  Their products are now made to a price point, and Meade ranks its different optics companies to price points (Redfield, Weaver, Simmons).

I bought a Simmons scope for a .22RF three years ago and was very dissappointed.  I would not trust a current Simmons handgun scope an a handgun with the recoil your .270 will produce.  Others are welcome to disagree with me, but it is my money.  Buy a cheap scope which fails - you don't have a scope and you don't have your money.
