More power is not always a good thing.  Big diameter bullets at medium velocities are very effective and all that is needed for 90% of all hunting in the lower 48.

I'm curious to see what rifles Sako will offer in this caliber. It would be great if they made a carbine style rifle to fit the caliber. If Thompson Center chambers it in the Encore I would pick one up in a heart beat. I don't need it but its easier to justify WANTING something than NEEDING something.

I have no idea where it will be 5 years from now.  Its kind of a niche cartridge IMHO.  My first .338 will probably NOT be the Federal.

Several guys I have hunted with are looking into the bigger, slower calibers of hunting guns.  The reason?  They are tired of destroying game meat with high velocity rounds when the animals are close.  One friend got his deer a couple years ago at about 40yds.  Used a 270 win and lost about 1/3 the meat.  It was a quartering to shot, so the only shot available was in the left front shoulder, into the vitals.  Ruined the shoulder, half the ribs on the left side and half on the right side on exit.

Read the levergun forums or similar and read what the guys with the 444, 45-70 even the 35 cals are saying.  Most usually ALWAYS post "eat right up to the hole" cause the caliber is large enough to drop the animal cleanly but not so much meat destructive shock.

Will the 338 fit in this category?  Not sure, but certainly much heavier bullets are available for it than the 308 and a 225gr or 250gr, 338 bullet will plow through a deer or elk without the meat destroying shock of a high velocity 165gr from a 308.

Might just have a limited following like the 358 Win, but the 35's are somewhat coming back (as in 350 Mag?).  Who knows?
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Less recoil for a larger round is why I'm interested.

338 is a great cal with a wide range of premium bullets available which aren't always available in 8mm and .358.
In many ways it's an obvious choice and bullets like the Nosler Ballistic Tip which people have regarded as dubious when propelled by the power of the Win Mag should be perfect for the slower Federal cartridge.
Plus it's cheaper to build in a rifle, standard bolt face, standard case size(i.e.fits more in the mag) and easier on the shoulder.
I'd be guessing that it'll be akin to a 8x57 220gn load with a little more velocity & a slightly bigger hole.
