Coyotes sound like Hynnas

Last night the coyotes woke me.  When I went out they sounded like Hyennas.  Any ideas what that is about?

Perhaps you were hearing the challenge taking place between the dominate male and its compeditor for a patch of territory. this would be like short barks (two or three) followed by equally short howls.

Could also have had a caller out there playing one of the parts.

I know it was not a caller.

It sounded like 4-6 dogs in one group then there was another dog from another area also chiming in...

it must be the moon.seems last time we were at the new moon.and we are right now also..they have been doing the same around my place also.I think all that racket gives em courage and frighten the quarry in to doing stupid things like running into the mouth of one of them filthy coyotes.
