Gone bad 7400
« on: October 10, 2003, 03:19:09 PM »
Maybe someone can help. I have a Rem. 7400 30-06 It used to shoot inch and ahalf  to inch and three quarter inch groups at 100 yds.
Year before last it started shooting 3 inch groups. Changed scopes same thing. I reload so checked powder, primers etc. all OK. Checked gun real good found barrel bolt loose. Tightened it groups went to around 2 inches.
This summer got it out best I can get is 4 inches. This rifle has been shot quite a bit , with the long throat they already come with could my barrel be shot out? If so how do I check it?

                Thank You

thirty06,
In the early 1980s I practiced with and shot several military style matches with a Remington semi-auto. It started out a very accurate rifle and went to hell in about 2200 rounds. The usual screw tightening to the indices I had on the firearm screws with model paint no longer kept its accuracy up to par. Additionally, a very thorough cleaning did not help. I sent it back to Remington and they tuned it for free and sent it back, whereupon it was accurate again. They also sent a letter that stated it was not made for the type of heavy use it was getting in the military type matches it was being used in. So, if you have shot this rifle heavily, it may be tired as my rifle was, and perhaps a trip back to Remington is in order.

Fixed my problem. Turned out the barrel nut had woked a little loose.
Couldn't hardly tell, took it all the way off cleaned it, put it back together worked good as new.

targshooter-

how do you compare the remington 7400 to the browning bar (in 30-06), does the BAR also go bad after 2500ish rounds?  which one is inherently more accurate ?

Never owned a Browning BAR,  but they are treated very well in write ups here, on other web sites and in gun magazines. I would suggest going to the Browning site and downloading their BAR User's manual. Then do the same for the Remington. The BAR strips down more easily. Neither offers the ease of maintenance of a military style rifle. There was a company offering a BAR spin off as a sniper rifle, ArmsTech I believe. They catalogued it several years ago.
