Bersa pistols/ help me out here, please !
« on: February 08, 2006, 07:53:59 AM »
Ok I asked about the Walthers, but I went to a gun show on Sat. and found these Bersa's all .22 cal. So what is the difference in these models ? Bersa mod. 23, Bersa mod. 644 and Bersa firestorm. I noticed the 644 had a different kinda 0f trigger. What is a singel/double action ?
I don't know ANYTHING ABOUT HANDGUNS. The only one I ever owned was a rugar .22 semi  You pulled back the slide and pulled the trigger untill empty. The trigger didn't have a hard pull but they were telling me you had to pull the trigger every time to cock and fire these pistol's.I tried a Tarus pt ..22 and didn't like it.
Can you help a dummy like me out ? or suggest others that work like my old rugar. Yes I did look at a Walther ppk. too pricey.
     Thank you.

Cb, my suggestion to you would be....another Ruger!  Any of the Mark's are as good as you can get for the money.  Browning Buckmark not as good (opinion only) for more money.  Sig makes a 22 semiauto but it too is pricey.  About all of the 22's are either too high or lack quality/reliability/accuracy.  Smith & Wesson make a 22 auto loader, I have one, I still have it only because my son gave it to me.
Single action auto is when you cock the arm once, the pistol cocks it's self every time it fires.  Double action is when the pistol is being cocked while you are pulling the trigger which increases the effort necessary to pull the trigger.
Something to consider would be a single action revolver, again Ruger, Single Six is a cowboy looking pistol that is a real pleasure to shoot.

Thank you, that clears things up a little. I guess what I was asking is if these guns are semi-auto.  So, if it has a hammer I can carry it loaded then cock the hammer fire and it will recock its self so all I need to do is pull the trigger again. My wife needs a small handgun to carry in her vechicle as she is a hospice nurse and gets way out in the boonies to see patients. Should I get a .22 or .25 she has no experience in shooting anything so I will put her through a training course.

A wife unfamaliar with handguns puts a whole new light on the situation.  Get her the training first.  While  at the training she should be able to try a few different handguns, some familiarity helps make better choices.
My first thought is a revolver in at least 38 cal..  Small ones like the size of the J-frame (5 shot) Smith & Wesson immediatly comes to mind, and I've found that the three inch barrel version is easier for a novice to hit with.  It can be fired single(cock the hammer for each shot) or double action(just pull the trigger).  Good used can be had for less than a new Ruger Mark.

Don't buy the bersa... they are cheap, and I'm not just talking about price.  There are many quality pistols out there in small calibers that you can find a good deal on, especially a .22.  Price is the only thing bersa has going for them.  I'm surprised when i see them they don't say milton-bradley on the side :-D

Let me guess you've never owned one.

The Bersa's are cheap, but I wouldn't call'em junk. I've had a few of the 380's(wife has one now), and I had a Bersa 9mm. Every single one of mine, as well as quite a few others I've seen in action shot like a dream, and functioned flawlessly.

I'll admit that they're not made of the quality steels that some of the big names use, but I can personally say that they'll handle thousands of rounds with no problems as far as wear.

I agree with Jerry. My .380 is a great little pistol for the money. In fact, it's just a great little pistol, period.

:cb2: If you are getting something for your wife to use, the most important thing is make sure your wife can use it. I used to sell guns, and far too often I saw men comming in to buy their wives a gun, but they looked at something they wanted their wives to have, rather than a gun the wife could actually use.

Before you buy your wife an automatic, make sure she can operate the slide first. It's more than just strength—it's technique as well. Just because YOU can do it, and it seems easy to YOU, don't assume your wife will able to do so if it jams in an emergency situation. (Do you even want her to carry a gun that can jam in an emergency situation?) Have her try it in the store. If she can't operate the slide, don't get it thinking she can learn how later, because 99% of the time she won't. Also, is the grip comfortable? Some automatics are just too big for some women to handle well.

Practice shooting at the range: Can she load the magazine easily? Pop it in and make it seat properly? Operate the slide? Clear a jam? Are the controls (safety, magazine release, slide release) easy for her to operate? If any of this is hard, a woman isn't going to do it.

Therefore, I'd suggest a revolver. Simple and easy to load. Fewer working parts. If it ever goes "click" instead of "bang" all she has to do is pull the trigger again. Very reliable. The grips are smaller and usually more comfortable. In this world where everybody seems to be in an automatic craze, you can usually pick up a good used S&W, or Ruger revolver at a very good price. (Just don't buy anything that starts with a "T"!) A .38 is great, but don't think that is all a woman can handle. Paxton Quigley ran a handgun training school for women. (Don't know if she still does.) She said the two guns her students liked to shoot the most were the 1911 (.45 ACP) and the Ruger GP100 (.357 mag.). My wife is a medium sized woman and carries a .357. Her favorite gun to shoot is my Glock 21 (a BIG .45 ACP). Women do not focus on recoil. My wife doesn't even know what that is. She was trained to focus on the front sight, and does. Men (most anyway) are focusing on what is about to happen.

If you do go with an automatic, please don't get anything smaller than a 380 for personal protection. And if, for some reason you do go smaller, get the .22 rather than the .25. The .25 is sooooo under-powered. I'd rather put my faith in a rock.

Good luck. I know you're getting a ton of advise, but then, that's what this forum is for. There are a lot of knowledgable shooters here. I'm always learning something new. You've come to the right place!

ButlerFord45 and Old Griz have it exactly right . Take her to a training class ,let her shoot different guns and LET HER PICK IT OUT. If she don't like it or it does not fit her hand right she wont use it. You wasted your money and time unless you really were buying it for yourself anyway. Get her involved in the process
