Cleaning the 17HMR

I have tried to use the pull through cleaning "rods" on my 17HMR and they just don't work very well on that small a caliber. They are the ones specifically made for the 17 (Uncle Mike's was one brand I think) and they are so hard to pull through (even with oil) that I actually broke one the other day!

Anyone else have this problem? I guess I'll have to go to an actual cleaning "rod"!

I use a Patchworm with the right size patches, works best for me in my hmrs. Don't care for the bore snakes for regular cleaning, they work great for field work, tho.

You can make your own patchworm if you have a gas powered string trimmer.
Cut a piece of trimmer line about a 12 to 18 inches longer than your barrel. Take a sharp knife and sharpen one end to a point.(be careful)Use a candle, match, cigarette lighter to heat the opposite end and before it melts press onto a hard surface to flare the end. You may have to trim the flared end some so it will fit the bore of the .17. Center a patch on the pointed end and punch thru, then slide patck all the way to the flared end. WALLA-Homemade patch worm. :D Slide pointed end thru barrel to the other end of barrel and pull thru. :D

I've tried making my own and so have a lot of others at RFC, for less than $14 you can get one specifically for the .17 and 500 patches that are made for the tiny bore, quite a bargain if you ask me...and it won't break like the home made one leaving the patch and melted stub stuck in the bore!! If you do break one, they'll replace it free of charge, no questions asked..........well, they might ask if you double patched it which is about the only complaint I've seen on em!!! :oops:

I think the one I broke was an Uncle Mike's or something but I'm taking 'er back anyway. See what happens. Not sure why the sucker broke as it was made for 17 but I damn sure broke the string (black) part between the brass leader piece and the front part of the body (there's a little wire piece built in to the front part of the cleaning part). It shouldn't be that hard to pull through should it? Never had that happen with any other calibre!

17 cal bore cleaning

I prefer a pull cleaner for my 17s then a rod. My experience for stuck or broken pull cleaners is from using tool thick or too large a patch. I use small thin 22 patches that I cut in half for the 17. If you are using a thick patch you are courting trouble.

I tried the bore snake.  I could not get it to pull through, I quit before I broke it.  Took it back.  Now use a stainless rod, worm and brush for the 17 caliber.
