Need a little trap shooting input
« on: February 14, 2006, 03:26:16 AM »
I want to set up a little trap shooting place at my camp, I'm not looking to get into a permenent trap station I just want to be able to set up a portable trap thrower in my field and shoot some clays.
I would be greatful for some suggestions as this is all new to me, if you were doing it what would be the most cost efective way and what type of thrower would you suggest that would give the desired results?
I am considering the Cabelas One Step or Flightmaster traps.
Bear in mind please that I would be doing this alone in most cases.

Thanks and good hunting

It's pretty much impossible to set up an actual "trap" range as in the game of Trap as shot competitively in the manner in which you describe. In fact a single clays thrower can't really duplicate any game shot competitively such as skeet or sporting clays.

But it can be set up to have fun and help you practice your wing shooting. It's better if you have someone to release the birds for you but you can do it yourself at some minor disadvantage to your shooting. I've not gone to look at the machine you mention but any of the various clay bird throwers can be used in the manner I think you intend. Your shot angles are rather limited tho if you have to release it yourself unless you go to a VERY expensive machine with remote control. You're kinda stuck with beting within a few feet at most of the machine and thus your angles are mostly straight aways, not really that great of practice for field shooting.

I'd recommend you try to have someone with you say your wife, girl friend or a shooting partner or your child with you to pull the targets for you. That way you can get any angle you want.

Thanks Graybeard, thats pretty much what I had in mind just fun.
Probably in most cases the wife would be around to pull for me, in fact I have a little Citori 20ga. that I'm hoping to get her shooting so we could take turns doing the pulling.
I just need to figure out which machine I want to get.

I think mine is an Outers......low cost, bought some time mid 1980's.......spring loaded, and with a string to pull.......throws doubles pretty good........no telling how many thousands of clay birds it's tossed.  I see them at walmart for around $30........not sure if they're the same quality or not......I "mounted" the front on a 4X4, which holds it ok..but is still light enough to carry from the barn to the truck and back.....
