Can I get some opinions from some folks who have shot a 270 WSM?  I am trying to make a decision between this caliber and a straight 270.  Anything about what you like better about either one would be great.  Things like actual shots on game and distance, recoil, accuracy, and anything else you have learned.  Thanks  Buckfever

I've shot my cousin's rifle in this caliber. Maybe not enough to tell you what you want to know, but here's my impressions:

I'm not much bothered by recoil, so I didn't see much difference one way or the other between the .270 and the .270WSM. Accuracy seemed to be more dependent on the user and the gun than the caliber. I know the ballistics tables for what I shoot so for stuff longer than what I'm sighted in at, I just hold over by the appropriate amount. So I wasn't impressed much with "flatter shooting" claims.

About the only real difference was a shorter throw on the bolt but how often do people actually get a second shot with a bolt gun, anyway? The difference in time spent working the action didn't seem to add up to any real advantage for a second shot. Make the first one your best one and the question is moot anyway.

To me, it seemed like nothing to get excited about.

If you handload, by all means go for the .270WSM.  If you are restricted to factory ammo, the standard .270 Win is probably the better option.  Ammo for the standard .270 Win. is more widely available and the conventional bullet loads are a lot cheaper.  The Short Magnum has more performance capability, but the increase is nominal, maybe 200 fps across the range of bullets, given similar barrel length.  I believe the Short Magnum has more accuracy potential given the short, fat case.  But it probably is harder on barrels, and certainly the factory ammo is harder to find and more expensive.

Shot a 270 for 30+ years, now shoot a 270 WSM. Would never go back, recoil about the same to me, accuracy better, rifle handles better( Winchester Super Shadow)

I have both and really like both. IMO, I wouldn't sell a 270 Win. to buy a WSM. However if I were starting from scratch, I would go with the 270wsm. Been lots of discussion about the life span of the "SHORTS". They might not all make it, but the 270wsm will be here forever.
My 270wsm is aRuger M77 MarkII lam/stainless. With factory Fed. 140 Accubonds, it shoots hole for hole at 100yrds. With the fac 130 BT it's less than 1/2 " at 100. Still havn't deciced which bullet I will use for whitetail yet. Have killed several with each of the two bullets and I like certian carictaristics(thats bad) of each. Right now I'm leaning toward the accubonds. May also give the 130 TSX a go round. Ballisticlly speaking the 270wsm will be very hard to beat on mid-size game. To try and answer all your post, Have killed around 6 deer with mine, all between 85 and 225 yards. both bullets did well. recoil is a non factor between the two. It will vary depending on which rifle you choose in either cal.

Hope this helps and let us know what you decide and WHY, DM

I have never been a fan of the 270 win. I have always perferred 7 mm, 7-08, 280 and 7 mag. However, I tried a 270WSM and now it is my "go to" gun. I had a Tikka first and my son took it now I have a Kimber that I got with practically no use at a great price. I'm still prejudiced, I do not want a 270 win.

I've shot a .270 win for 10+ years now with a great deal of success on some very large bucks and have never had one walk away yet.  With that said - while I don't plan on going out to buy a .270 WSM (Planning on getting the .300 WSM though - see my post in this same forum).  I think that if starting from scratch the .270 WSM would be a nearly ideal purchase for the reasons that all of the other posters mentioned.  I however have to say that I don't think I'd take any amount of money for my Ruger M77 Mk II .270 win.  Its my baby and always will be, was my first rifle and a gift from my father.  For CXP2 size game  I don't think you could possibly make a bad choice with either gun.  Enjoy and let us know how your new firearm shoots!

I have a  couple of sandard 270's and love them both are very accurate and any deer or antelope I have shot went down immediately. I just bought a Browning medallion in 270WSM, so far no complaints it is shooting under 1MOA with Barnes 130 gr TSX bullets. Can't say I see a differance in recoil either but I do like the shorter bolt throw and lift of the Browning

I have the 270 Win and the recoil doesn't bother me at all. I don't even know why the 270 WSM was even made. Unless its just another gun. :D

As a matter of personal preference I never cared for the 270 win, I have always been a 7mm man but I tried the 270WSM and now I have two of them Tikka and Kimber. My son-in-law has a 270 win but I don't care for it. I mounted his scope and shot the gun in at 100 yd . It was ok but I still do not want a 270 win.

My son has a  270 wsm ,  We were going to get a  standard .270 from gander mountain, so we ordered the gun. bought some factory ammo and went to the range and the bullets would not fit in the rifle, I said what the heck!! looked at the barrel and it said .270 wsm on it.  I thought to myself you have got to be kidding me!!! I called them and said you guys orded the wrong gun!!  They said sorry it was a mix up and offered to take it back, but said we got a little more gun for our money. So  we kept it and traded dies back for the right dies ect. Well my son loves this caliber and I can honestly say I  wish I had one.  He is 16, handels recoil no problem. Nice thing about reloading the  .270 wsm you can always load it down to .270 if you desire to.

Handwerk, The  Kimber is my choice after shooting both. The accuracy is almost the same with the edge going to the Kimber. Kimber has less felt recoil and it just feels better in my hands and looks better to my eye. Kimber is built with a true short action while the Tikka still uses the long action for the short mag. I also bought a Kimber Montana in a 7-08 and it is so much fun to shoot. With the purchase of these two Kimbers  my rifle fund is gone so I'll have to wait for some time but I would like to have one of their new long actions in the 25-06. in the classic.
