I was thinking about picking up a Remington 597 LS HB in .22WMR but have seen various negative posts about it on the NET.

It's hard to tell if what you read on other forums is true or not so I am looking for someone who has owned one that could comment.

Does anyone currently own a Remington 597 LS HB or has owned one in the past that could comment on the quality of this rifle.

I just bought a 22 mag in a lever (Henry) and it shoots great but I did look at the auto loaders and If I was going to buy one I guess it would be the Magnum Version of the Ruger 10/22 as this design is proven as a winner and is known to be dependable. I am not knocking the Remington but I have heard bad stories also and like you are leary of buying one not knowing if the stories are true or not. I do know that the local gunshop stocks and sells lot of rimfires and hardly ever carries the Remington in stock but do carry Marlin, Henry, Winchester, Ruger, and Savage 22's regularly but I have not seen many Remingtons there might be coincidence and I have never asked them why as I never gave it any thought until now. They do carry lots or Remington centerfires and shotguns so it is not like they do not carry Remingtons I just have not seen many Remington 22's there. I have bought guns in the past that after I bought them was sorry the last was a Savage Striker sport 22 mag as the Trigger was horrible so I do not blame you for being careful good luck and I hope you get the answers you seek. I've got a 597 LS in 17 HMR, but it's got the sporter barrel. I haven't had a chance to shoot it very much, but it appears that it'll be an accurate rifle. Yes, the Remington has a plastic (polymer) trigger guard, which is rather cheap looking, but it works.  The fit/finish are much better than the 10/22 SS/laminated that I've got though. So far, I'm quite pleased with it. My rifle does have the new/improved metal magazine. It's stamped 17 HMR 22 WMR on the floorplate. The trigger can be fixed with a Volquartsen hammer, same as the Ruger. If you do choose to buy a Ruger 22 Mag, make sure you get the rifle with twin extractors, not the single extractor model. Ruger actually took the 10/22 Mag off of the market for a while to correct several problems, one of which was extraction. In addition to the second extractor, Ruger fluted the chamber to aid with extraction problems. One more thing, there was a problem with  bolt stop pin breakage in the 10/22 Mag rifles. An aftermarket bolt stop pin appears to fix this also. MI VHNTR

I picked up the Ruger 10/22RBM today.

Do you know if there is anyway that I can determine if my rifle has had the factory changes that you mentioned or not?

I am also interested in putting an aftermarket stock on it. Does anyone know if there are any available for the 10/22RBM?

Volq makes some kicking ones.
Hogue makes a cheap decent one (I have)

Lots of people like the thumb-hole stocks, I dont.

I like the rubber feel of the hogue...real grippy.

My mods to my baby:

Polished/fitted trigger assembly and Volq Hammer.
Receiver has polished sides w/blues top and front.
Diamond knurled, chamfered polished bolt.
Head space worked for ideal gas seal.
Green Mountain barrel.  Way cheaper than Volq, shoots just as good.
Harris 6-9' bipod.

She will put 1/2 inch groups at 75 yards with the good stuff.
Shoots way straighter than me, and thats all Im asking.
