30-06 data

Looking for a recipe for a "shorty" 11o grain bullet with IMR 4895 powder. I have one from there selections, but the overal case length on their list does not coenside with the COL I have. These bullets are .612 in length and the RP(once fired) case I am using is 2.455. They call for a COL of 3.170. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. :D

I haven't loaded any 110 gr in the 06 but I ran into something similar when loading 95 gr in the 6.5 x 55.  I got better accuracy if I seated the bullets deeper in the case.   I was using them in a single shot with a long throat and thought it might be better to put the bullets closer to the lands.  With shallow seating, the bullet may have not been aligned straight or the case did not grip the bullets tight enouth to get consistent pressures.  When the bullet was seated with about half of it in the case, the groups decreased about one inch.  You will probably have to experiment to find the best seating depth but I would do it with a mild load first. Good luck.

Speer list two 110 grain bullets in their data;
"varminter HP" with COL of 2.870
round nose with COL of 2.915
What bullet are you using and what data is you load from?
PaulS

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.

???????????

3.170" is about right for a 150 grain and up bullet...what manual are you using?

Speer COL lengths ranging from 2.870" to 3.000", depending on which one of THEIR 5 110 grain bullets you are using.

Hodgdon lists 3.170 using a Hornady 110 grain bullet.

While Hornady lists lengths from 3.015 to 3.170 depending on which one of THEIR 4 110 grain bullets you are using.

Lyman lists 3.000 using a Sierra bullet.

Printed OAL numbers are a farce.  The OAL of a cartridge is totally dependent upon the bullet you are using and the firearm yoiu are using.

As for loading:
IMR-4895 From 44.0 grains to 55.0 grains
 Winchester WLR Primer

I am using the IMR data for 56.0 grains of 4895 powder . I got info off the IMR website. This states a velocity of 3303fps. My problem is the C.O.L. they state does not add up for this bullet.

I might add that the bullets are from Berry's MFG Co., out of St. George, Utah.

Call 'um and ask 'um or e-mail 'um.  Hodgden will respond to your question.  Seems to me that such a light bullet is at the very lower end of IMR 4895's effectiveness.  Doesn't mean you can't do it, but a faster powder may be better.

If memory serves, bullets should be seated at least one caliber (.308 in your situation) deep in the case neck. You could start there and try deeper seating to see what shoots best.

I hope you have better luck than me.  I never could get a 110 to shoot worth a flip out of a 30-06.
