I can't find what I want
« on: February 19, 2006, 06:50:05 PM »
I am looking for a H&R handi-rifle in 30-06 or 270 and the 223 and 243 in extra brls, that I can use only with open sights and only blued with the synthetic stocks. My problem is the larger calibers do not come with open sights or with the correct butt stock for open sight use.

  Any ideas are helpful
  Thanks  45north

See the RSR Specials post down the page, they have them with laminated straight stocks. Buy/trade to get the syn stocks. You can get the extra barrels with sights when you place an order, but if it's not a regular offering, they'll charge extra for the sights.

Scroll down the NEF H&R Centerfire forum page and you'll find a thread titled RSR Specials - or just click on this link and it will take you there:

45north,
Those are pretty good prices on those RSR guns.  I have seen some of those stocks, close up.  They are really great.  Good luck with your search.  Keep in mind, with the price of fitting and shipping and barrel plus your cost to ship the receiver to H&R you will be over half way into the price of a second gun.  Something to think about!  Also, don't forget that you will have to pay a FFL transfer fee if you order one of the guns from the RSR page.  I think you will have to go to the Gun Source to get one of those.  I don't think RSR retails...they are a supplier or buying group.

If I'm not mistaken it has been talked about before ordering a barrel, ask if instead of the drill and tap, you can have open sights fitted to it. I believe it was like2hunt that posted this, I could be wrong about this?
It doesn't say on the Website about this, but if you call and ask directly they might just bend and make it happen.

I seem to remember seeing an Accessory Barrel list that had a 3006 barrel listed with open sights.  It may have been the '04 list that used to be posted on the sight or may have come with my 12ga combo .  I just can't remember.  Give CS a call, they may have some around still.  I am nearly positive on this.

The serial # on my combo starts with NN.  If I am correct, that would make it a '99.  I cannot find the barrel accessory any further back than 2004, but I sure seem to remember seeing the '06 list WITH sights, somewhere.

Tim, that's not what I was remembering.  But since you said that I went back to that site...they do list a 22" 3006 on page 3 of the NEF list.  It says wood stocks and adjustable sights, but the pic is a standard '06 with a scope rail on it.  I guess the only way to know for sure would be to contact them.

I did a search for lik2hunt's original post on adding iron sights but didn't find it. As I recollect**, H&R charges, or did charge at the time, $47 to add iron sights to a barrel that isn't offered with iron sights to begin with. So any barrel that isn't offered with iron sights, needs to be drilled and tapped for mounting of those sights, which makes sense cuz they aren't going to drill and tap it for nothing and sights cost a lot more than a scope rail. If a barrel is offered with sights like 44mag, .45-70, ect, they will send it with iron sights or a scope rail for no extra charge. If you want an iron sighted, normally stocked barrel to have a scope rail in addition to the iron sights, they charge extra for the scope rail.

If this is incorrect, please correct me.

Tim

** Sometimes my recollector doesn't work too well!!!!

EDIT: I did find this reference to adding sights..

My biggest problem is the local FFL dealer here does not want to put a gun on his books that he did not sell. The last time I tried it he charged me $ 50.00 for the transfer plus I paid $ 25.00 for the shipping and that killed any savings from buying outside his shop. That was his point for the 50.00 charge. My other option is driving 225 miles round trip to another dealer. Maybe I should get a FFL myself.
Well I ordered a 22 hornet with plastic stocks and open sights from him  today for $ 250.00 plus an order of brass and bullets from midwayusa. When everything arrives I should be set for a while.

If ypu have the iron sight problem solved and the only difference is the Monte Carlo vs. standard stock set I am sure you could work out a stock swap with the guys here, I myself and many others have swapped, bought, and sold stock sets here. Stocks can also be altered and the Mointe Carlo or Pistol grip removed to change them to better suit your purpose, I have done both changes and they came out great!!! If you need help with it just let me know....<><....

Thanks 45north!! I realize you're up there in the boonies, but there might be a private FFL dealer closer or one that charges less, enter your zip code in this handy locator and see what pops up...

quickdtoo,

Well I tried that locator link and I was right the closest is Delta Junction 110 miles from me each way. Two options showed up one guy wants $ 25.00 and the other wants $ 35.00 for a transfer fee.
I guess there are down sides to living in the middle of the wilderness.

  thanks anyway

I don't recall this coming up on this thread, but Quick will know.  I seem to recall something about Williams Peep sights using the same screw holes as the scope rail.  If that is correct, all you would need to do is have a smith drill and tap for the front sight.  Just thought of that.  Quick, please let me know if I am off base or have this twisted around.  Thanks

stimpylu32,
We are in the minority at the $10 price for transfers.  I, too, feel lucky to have found a guy so close with that price.  Makes things a bit more affordable.  Especially after adding the freight charges.
