Hunting Jacket Recomendations?
« on: January 20, 2007, 02:12:03 AM »
I am in the market for a new warm hunting jacket for southern Alabama.  I have been overseas working in the Caribbean for a few years so I get colder faster than most people as my body has'nt adjusted back to my home state climate yet.  I used to have a Browning down jacket but has long since disappeared.  We have a Mossy Oak store right down the road but the folks are'nt very helpful.  I have seen a Down coat in cabelas that looked nice for around $100 (my price range).  Nowadays there are many types of camo, so also need a recomendation on camo type for sitting in treestands in Alabama pines.  Any recomendations would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

I'm going to recommend 3 items I like to see in the clothing.

1) quiet material (they do really made some soft stuff nowadays)
2) tall/long size to cover the back and stop wind blowing up it
3) the ability to dress in layers underneath so I can adjust my body heat for different activity.

I usually buy a thin good quality outer shell that offers good wind/rain protection and use old junky wool sweaters underneath I can peel off if I'm sweating.

I did get a super deal the last month on new military gore tex jackets. Here's a link. Check the prices I think you will be shocked. This is quality stuff 31 bertram

I got the woodland US Military issue. I live about 13 miles from the warehouse and they have a retail customer showroom. I cruise thru every 2 weeks and get even better deals than the internet or catalog. I'm a big guy so 2x and 3x is what I prefer.

One jacket was X large/long and the other jacket was 3x. I'll use the X large for mildly cold weather and the 3x when I have to bulk up underneath for minus sub zero stuff.

I got new military issue goretex parka and pants for around for $72.00
Thats (2) complete sets of goretex parka/pants for under $150.00  ;D The pants were 40-44 waist (bare minimum for me) apparently the military will only accept so big of a gut but a big barrel chest is ok  ::)

The gore tex jackets do go fast. They have tons of new german military goretex pants usually. Here's  a link to their german goretex pants. Looks like they still have lots of them. I use them at work in the railroad yards and it's tough stuff.

Look at the prices  :o very cheap.

I don't like their french military clothing though. The french must all have short arms   :-\  none of their stuff fits right.

By the way 31 bertram the military did a study with some soldiers that had been stationed a long time in the artic and brought them down to the tropics for 24 hours and flew them immediately back to the artic. They found "all" of the soldiers had to be reconditioned for the cold again.

Bearfat;
I checked the Gore tex coats on Cabelas and they were $200 and $300.  I also found a wool shirt (38 oz.) for $9.00 in that Sportsmans Guide.  The used Military Gore tex coats were about half the price of the new ones, according to the description they are in great condition.  Anyway, I'm gonna make an order tomorrow morning.  I've got to write this hunting season off but hopefully I will be ready for next year, unless we head back on overseas contract.
