Best meat besides venison?
« on: November 02, 2004, 01:23:50 PM »
My girlfriend commented on how good the moose meat tastes. She commented that it tastes better than deer.

What I would like to know is what meat other than venison do you consider to be exceptional table fare. The problem with moose is that the permits in northern New England are given out by a lottery and it is really difficult to obtain.

So. What I would like to know is what meat ranks right up there? Buffalo? Antelope? , or something else?

I really like armadillo and they come in their own pan.  If can't find a "piccadilly"  elk will have to do.  The best I ever had  was at elk camp cooked by the guide's wife.  Simply crockpotted cubed meat  all day and put in BBQ sauce for the last half hour and served it with her homemade sourdough biscuits.  Never wanted to come home after grub that good.

bigbore442001> well, everyone's tastes are different! I loved the wild boar meat my brother gave me, (I wasn't predjudiced because I hadn't shot it :-) ), but I have heard people say it's too strong and musky. To me, venison is hard to beat If it's properly cooked, as in not overcooked. Some of the small game is very, very good, squirrels and grouse in particular.
clodbuster> that guides wife knows the secret to cooking in a crockpot. Don't add any liquid till the meat is done. (so it roasts a little, instead of boils.) I have done the same thing with woodchuck, It is wonderful.

Turkey skin the bird, de-bone it, cut it into strips and marinate it in liquid smoke and Italian dressing overnight, flour it and deepfry.  the best wild game you will ever eat! oktx.

caribou is better than deer, elk, moose, or bear.  I've heard antelope is as good.

South Texas whitetail???????  Must be the mesquite.  Sorry but I'm guessing that they would taste a bit strong compared to Midwestern corn/alphalfa/soybean fed whiteys.

I have never to my reckolecktion eaten a norther deer that was raised on corn ect.I have shot and eaten more then my share of the s.texas white tails.down del rio way.where they get plenty of rain.and have an abundance of food to eat meaning variety.the mesquite down that way are not what is typicaly heard as mesquite bush.they are trees down there.arizona and N.M have the mesquite bush.any way the flesh reminds me of range fed beef.much gooder then feed lot beef.
I would one day love to head north and shoot and feist on one of those magnificent northern deer and see what they taste like.
afriend of mine that I hunted with in central america for years.used to fly to the states and hunt with friends. He was a Doctor,,he always told his friends in the U.S. that the venison in the states was not as tasty as the venison in the tropics.(he hunted all over the U.S.)so after many heated arguments.the Doc said next time I come I am bring venison from the jungles of central america and we will cook and eat then we can all make a decision.
so he did the following year we shot several deer and saved the hams for him to take.when he came back and reported the results to us.the meat he had taken was the tastyest that any had eaten.and it was atributed to the variety and many foods the deer could eat that made him tasty.the cows that are just fed corn on a feed lot.to me are just fat and taste like fat.all marbled with fat some folks like that.I do not like the fat.I was raised eating range fed.which I think is more tasty. If ya get the chance to go to south tex.I am sure you will enjoy the deer off the grill.I find I do not have to add any thing to the meat as it comes off the mesquite coals good to go..

In my house it's a tie for first place between Moose and Partridge.  I would trade a whole deer for a half dozen partridge. After that Caribou then Deer.  Black bear are pretty far down on my list and Griz and geese are at the bottom. Both are way to strong for my liking.

I  never ate Elk but I hear its great and I would love to try it. :D
