Gloves.. Uncle Mikes or PAST's ?

I'm thinking of buying a pair of gloves for shooting my new SW500. Which do you prefer and why ?

I have been using Uncle Mikes for years with my 500 Mag. I have worn out 3 pair. I have not tried the Past gloves but I  think my next pair will be Past, just to give them a try.  :D

I have the PAST. If I were doing it over I'd NOT have them. The seam is in just the right place to be wrong. With a real hard kicker at times I think I'd be better off without them as the recoil hitting that seam sure is painful. I've about quit using them as a result. Just a standard pair of thin leather gloves seem to do more good for me.

:cb2: I've been using a pair of baseball batting gloves for years. However, with a hard kicker I might go with the Uncle Mikes because it has a padded middle finger to protect it from the trigger guard.

My experience with Past products is poor. I bought a Past shoulder recoil pad for range work with large calibers. The pad had a strap arrangement that allowed it to slide off my shoulder. Well I just let it go until I saw that Past came out with a new design (apparantly because the old one was lousy). I called the Past company and explained the problem with the pad and told them that I would send the pad back for examination. The Past representative told me to buy a new pad!!!!!!! No more Past products for me.

Glad I did not buy the Past shooting gloves, I guess I will stick to the Uncle Mikes.

Past recoil muting equipment

I have the "Uncle Mike's" shooting gloves mostly because that's what I found in my search when I was looking for shooting gloves. They are a definite improvement though not a panacea for the right grip style.  I do use a Past shoulder type recoil buffer when shooting from the bench and the strap design is not as user friendly as I'd like but it surely does a good job of taming those heavy .45 70 loads in a Buffalo Classic (read cresent metal butt plate = serious pain and bruising).  My other half solved the awkwardness of fit by sewing the pad onto a web-mesh shooting vest.  Does good!

Can anyone say that any type of glove makes a big difference in recoil or improves there shooting? Will any of them help as cold weather protection ?

I have never liked gloves, but when it is below 30 you need something.. At any rate I should practice with them prior to needing them as weather protection.

I know it helps in felt recoil. My accuracy is not affected by shooting gloves either. In cold weather, I don't use shooting gloves, but I go have a pair of gloves that has a trigger finger that is thinner than the glove. They work great.  :D

:D Light weight military flight gloves, either the solid leather or the cloth/leather.  I have been usisng them for year, they make excellent shooting gloves.  :wink:

I have a pair of each. I bought the Past first, and was still whacking my gun hand middle finger. I got a set of Uncle Mike's and I'm very happy with them. In my case, I bought size large, even though I normally wear a size 9 1/2 glove. If they are too tight, they become restrictive in your grip and are hard to remove. I don't shoot anything with more recoil than a .357 magnum without gloves anymore. I did some damage to my hand shooting hard kickers when I was young and foolish, and have bone chips floating around in my knuckles. I put around 15,000 rounds through my first Ruger SBH, and that square backed trigger guard got me.

Where do you purchase them? I loved them for early bow season and I am sure they would work for me as shooting / hunting gloves. Been out for 20 years now and mine have all worn out.

:D I picked up a couple of pair of each at an Army Surplus store in Tuscon, AZ.  I love the leather/cloth ones for hunting and shooting, you can feel the trigger like they are not even there.  If I remember correctly I paid about tex bucks a pair for them.

my shooting gloves came from Target, In the bike section. They are well padded, open finger tips, and priced right. It works for hard kicker hand guns, and bikes.

:cb2: I always pull them out when shooting anything that starts with a "4". And for some reason, I just like the feel of the gloves when shooting wheelguns. They don't even have to be padded. Had a pair of thin, comfortable, goatskin gloves that I shot with for a long time before they finally wore out.

:D There are several places on the web that offer the military flight gloves.  As I said, I found them in a Surplus store, but they can be bought from the following:  

     uscav.com    $29.99 a pair
     Aureus International  $29.50

They are excellent gloves for many things, but for shooting they can't be beat.   :wink:
