H'spacing on the case mouth, APC style????
« on: February 28, 2006, 08:47:58 PM »
Does anyone know of a CF repeating rifle that headspaced the crtridge case on the case mouth, like nearly all automatic pistols do???
I'm thinking of straight tper cases mostly.

Thanks, bull.

I should never comp0ose a technical question at 2:30 am :-)

In addition to the typo in the topic heading, "ACP" I didn't phrase my question very well.  Yes, your reply is a good oneand if these short rifles are included, there are a bunch of submachineguns that qualify.

This still isn't a bulletproof question, but I'm really interested to find if any "long" cartridges have been headspaced on the mouth, whether in repeaters or single-shot, whether straight or bottlenecked.

Rimless bottlenecked cases usually headspace on the shoulder(at the DATUM LINE).  Also JohnT forgot the 401 WSL. I'm sure there are others but the concept still has a lot of problesm. The belt on cases was likely the result of poor headspacing on the straight or nearly straight cases of the day. The lack of a good headspace point was made moot by the addition of the belt. There are also semi-rimmed cases such as the 220 Swift and the 6mm LeeNavy. These were halting steps to the rimless botlenecked case... (the swift was likely developed from the leenavy case). There are very few really powerful straight cased rimless rounds which is what I think you're looking for.. Most were developed from the big single shots or the later British belted (and) rimmed rounds..
