have a 16 1/4" in 308 fora pistol but would work for a short rifle. If  rifle only maybe 18". Have a good article on 21 3/4" barrels.

I have toyed with the idea of a 308 bull Encore at about 22". I think that would make a nice rig.   KN

I have a 19" Custom Shop .308 barrel on my Encore with a bantam stock.  The Encore being a break action is already inherently compact.  With that stock and that barrel is is really nice for hoofing around the woods, and it shoots great.

i have used 16.5" barrels in .308 and 7mm-08 as rifles before.  they work perfect, with the same accuracy as factory 24" barrels, but with just a little more muzzle blast.  not much velocity loss either...

« Reply #5 on: March 17, 2006, 03:53:11 AM »
GOOD MORNING ALL!
THIS IS MY FIRST FORUM SO PLEASE EXCUSE ME.
I HAVE A 24" 30/06 STANDARD BARREL GETTING "TRIMMED BACK"
AT THE GS NOW.I DECIDED TO HAVE IT CUT TO 16.5".MY REASONING
WAS THAT IT WOULD MAKE A PERFECT STALKING/STAND RIFLE IN
THE WOODS I NORMALLY HUNT,AND IF NOT I COULD REPLACE THE RIFLE
SCOPE WITH A PISTOL SCOPE AND HAVE ANOTHER HAND BOOMER!
I HOPE THE MUZZLE BLAST IS NOT TREMENDOUS THOUGH!  WHEN I GET IT BACK(HOPEFULLY NEXT WEEK),I CAN ADVISE MORE
IF YOU LIKE.

I always thought that using my .308 pistol barrell and rifle stock would make a dandy little carbine, but here in NY, I was told that this is illegal.  May not be everywhere, just might want to ask first, and not get into trouble.

I believe the FEDERAL LAW concerning short barrel rifle's is NO SHORTER
THAN 16" BARREL AND NO SHORTER OVERALL LENGTH THAN 26". I would however err on the longer side because you never know how smart the fellow reading the ruler is!I believe this would cost approx. 10 YEARS of FREEDOM and a FELONY CONVICTION!NO WORTH THE HASSLE
FOR SURE.Stay legal and keep on shootin!

Panman,

you can legally put a 48 inch barrel on a pistol or longer if you care to but you must have a barrel that is longer than 16 inches on a rifle and it MUST have an overall length of twenty-some inches too (can't remember for rifles but shotguns have to be longer at 28 inches OAL)

I agree with you!

If I remember from back when I had an FFL, the rule is as follows!

For a SHOTGUN, the barrel must be 18 inches, minimum!
For a RIFLE, the barrel must be 16 inches, minimum!
Both of the above firearms must be 26 inches overall length, minimum!

For a PISTOL/REVOLVER, the maximum barrel length is 16 inches!

So, a 16 1/4 inch barrel on a pistol "could" land the one in possession in hot water!

Chuck,

You are ok until you put the limit on the pistol / revolver. They can have any length barrel you want - you can use a 24 inch rifle barrel on a Contender with the pistol grip but you cannot use a 14 inch barrel with the rifle stock.

Indiana defines a handgun as :

35-47-1-6. "Handgun" defined. "Handgun"
means any firearm:
(1) designed or adapted so as to be aimed
and fired from one (1) hand, regardless of barrel
length; or
(2) any firearm with:
(A) a barrel less than sixteen (16) inches in
length; or
(B) an overall length of less than twenty-six
(26) inches.

I think the discussion is about apples and oranges here.  PaulS is referring to the Federal regulations while others are discussing individual state regs.  To stay out of jail know both if you are going to change barrels.  And count on trouble if you have a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches.
