Started to order a bull barrel 223 with 1 in 10 twist today thru Wal-mart today, but found in another retailer a regular barrel 223 Rossi with a 1 in 12 twist that comes with a mounted BSA scope and a hard carring case that about same price as the bull barrel. Now the scope mounted Rossi is a youth model, but woodworking is another of my hobbies, so modifying the rifle butt to fit me is no problem. I'm not a super serious shooter intent on 50 yard groups the size of a dime and I won't be shooting prairie dogs at 150 yards. Just like to go to range couple a times a month and spend a leisurly 3 or 4 hours shooting the ammo I reload in three rifles. Think plinking with a 223 would be inexpensive and a fun addition to my family of rifles.
So, does a bull barrel 223 with 1 in 10 twist provide that great of an advantage over a regular Rossi barrel with 1 in 12 twist.

The faster twist 1 in 10" has a little wider range of bullet weights you can use (ie up to 65 grns). The 1 in 12" twist is at its best with 50 grn and lighter. Mine (a .223/20ga combo) loves Winchester White box 45 grn HPs.

I have yet to shoot the Bull Barreled model. Personally I like heavy barrels, and find that I get better accuracy out of them. Not always, but more than not. There are many reasons for this, but no need to go into that right now.
Anyway, if you are a reloader(which it sounds like you are

) Then I personally would go for the heavy barrel with a 1-10 twist. More reloading options are always a plus in my book. As kjeff50cal pointed out.

But too it depends on what you want. If you want a good little shooter to plink with and carry around, then the regular model should suit you well.

If you don't plan on moving around all that much with it, and want better accuracy plus more reloading options, then the Bull Barrel would fit the bill.
Toss up for what you want.

I have a heavy barrel and am very happy with it. It shoots the white box winchester 45 grain ammo very well. I personally like the 10" twist and have option being able to shoot the lighter as well as the heavier bullets. I can't tell you anything about the regular barrel but I don't think that the heavy barrel is bad at all to carry around to hunt with. I use it on coyotes.

:grin: well I bought the 1 in 12 twist Rossi and a few boxes of ammo. First new rifle I'd bought in 40 years. Laughted at the paperwork required. Like I said it was the youth model and I'm 6'2''. Actually liked the way it shoulders and I line up with scope. It will be amusing, when I show up at the range with my cannon, a 43 spanish Rolling Block and this pop gun. Also, like I said 40 years since I bought a new gun. The cost of my .22 cal model 99 M1 Marlin, 1891 Argentine Mauser, M47 Madsen 30-06, and 1879 Remington RB combined was less than the Rossi.
