Author Topic: Anyone Have Experience -Mossberg 500 Muzzleloader Barrel? (Read 5420 times)

I saw an ad for a Mossberg 500 Muzzleloader barrel that simply replaces the 12 gauge shotgun barrel and will turn your Mossberg 500 into a 209x50 muzzleloader.

I was wondering has anyone bought one, tried one? Seen one? If so whats the sccop? Accurate? good/bad? Any thoughts appreciated. The barrel seems to sell for around $95 with adjustable sights.

a buddy of mine has one and has taken a few deer with it, and has had no problem with it except got checked by a dnr agent during mz season, i guess the ram rod did'nt make it look like a muzzle loader ?

No experience to report on with this configuration, but in regard to the last observation, here in RI such a firearm is specifically banned by hunting regulations for use during Muzzleloader Deer season... I would guess to make it easier for Conservation Officers (I think they call them 'Environmental Police' now, sheesh!) to tell at a distance if someone is sneaking a shotgun into the muzzleloader season.

That shows the outdated ignorance of governmental lawmaking in regard to firearms, since anyone who would opt for a shotgun in preference to even a traditional front loader of sufficient caliber and thorough design is actually placing a ballistic handicap on himself, not cheating an advantage. Of course with a pump gun he would have the option of multiple shots (which someone like this would probably need! :-D )

Sold quite a few over the years and never heard a bad word about them. Had one gentleman that brought his back cause it wouldn't shoot. Turned out he tried one bullet and one powder charge. After we explained load development to him he bought some more stuff and left. Came back a week later with a target with one ragged hole in it. 100 yards he said, I don't know for sure.

I dont think NC hunting regulations would prohibit such an arrangement. I am curious how accurate they are and how they compare to say any of the mid line Muzzleloaders, ie, Omega, CVA, Knigfht etc.

There are a couple things a prospective buyer should be aware of about this barrel. First, the blowback of corrosive residue back into the internals of your receiver would be a real drawback to this design and cleaning could be a nightmare. Second, if you wanted to scope the setup, you would be limited to a saddle type mount or the cost of drilling and tapping the receiver. The receiver mounted scope with the removable barrel setup is not the most desirable as far as acuracy and return to zero.

With the price of this barrel and if you wanted to scope your setup, you could get a very servicable stand alone in-line rifle without rusting out your 500 in the process. Just my $.02.

my buddy has taken his share of turkey, deer and every thing else i know for a fact as he has mounts to prove it, but evediently as far as accuracy he know's what works for him .

Just to help Busta prove a point... My Dad and I were setting up my grandfather's barrel for an upcoming hunt. He had bought sabots and told us to sight the barrel for them. We shot some round balls through the barrel to check the sights and then went to shoot the sabots. Well Dad only fired 1 shot. Smoke rolled back through the reciever and the right side of his face was black from the blow back! Needless to say we didn't shoot any more sabots and told my grandfather to stick with round balls, and this was the first time anything like this had happened. My grandfather likes his, but we all think that the ramrod is a little flimsy. Hope this helps.

p.s. In hind sight, those were high pressure sabots, becasue Papie gave them to me to shoot in my Knight. But with 80 grains of powder and a patched round ball that is one deadly gun.
