Shooting shot in a shot cup out of a rifled barrel!!
« on: February 23, 2006, 12:04:30 PM »
High speed footage shows that the shot never leaves the shot cup until the cup has physically left the barrel.

Has anyone here ever done it using a 28 ga shotcup with a 50 cal rifled ML?

Any educated thoughts?
Uneducated thoughts I already have on my own...

If this is possible without any damage to the rifling it makes a smoothbore ML possibly just another tool but a tool that is not necessary

I don't belive 28 gage will work in a 50 cal but it works in a 54!One of the problems with shooting out of a rifled barrel is wad colum spins and leaves a patern shaped like a donut with very few hit in center!yottey

I think I've got a better chance of shootin' a good group outa my .56 smoothy, than you do gettin' a good pattern outa a .54 rifle.

I will be using the base of a 28 gauge shotgun wad in my 50 cal muzzleloaders to shoot conicals as recommended in the High Performance Muzzleloading. They got better groups than just a felt wad alone. I have no experience with this issue but I read shooting shot/wad thru a rifled barrel would put a spin on the wad and fling out the shot resulting in a poor pattern. Would be cool to try to see what happens.

I would bet that the pattern will stink due to the rotation, just as a .22 with rifling does to birdshot.  Maybe if you have like 1-70" rifling, however, it will be slow enough to use for close range?

The 28 ga wad should work fine in most 50s.  I've used the bases in mine before.
