« on: May 03, 2006, 12:55:45 PM »
I just bought a Stevens model 30 Favorite take down model and I am wondering how to mount a scope on it.There is one drilled and tapped hole in front of the reciever. But thats it.The barrel is octagon so I am not sure how difficult it will be to get bases to fit on it.Any suggestions or personal experences?

Not sure why you want to scope it as I do not think any scope mounts were made for this. The only thing I could suggest is make a side mount  scope mount out of angle iron that you can mount a scope base to.  proably 2 inch angle. Then cut to size with the top wide enough to mount over the center of the reciever and wide enough to mount a good base. You could go with standard weaver bases or if you want to go narrowier you could use a 10/22 mount screwed on to the mount you make.  Then to make it easy so you do not wreck the reciever take it to a machinist or a gun smith and have them make longer bolts with the right threads for the ones already in the reciever. Drill the mount you made or had made to match a couple of them bolts and that should work and not look too bad if you do a nice job on the mount and polish and blue it.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Can I have the barrel drilled and tapped for a 22 slide plate? Then I would be able to use standars weaver or other makes of slide on ring mounts.

Yea you could do that but it would permanently alter the gun which some folks do not like if you were to resell it and it would alter the resale value. But if you plan on keeping it yea that would work also. I would make sure that a GOOD gunsmith does it to make sure it is done right. The side mount I described has been used on lots of old receivers like the rolling blocks and falling blocks ect. IF you find a copy of the NRA gunsmithing books it shows a Rolling block altered that way. Yet the nice thing is you can take the mount off if you used the existing holes and put the origional screws back in and it will be back to origional.  Jim

Savage sells the Model 30 (at least some of them) with a barrel mounted scope mount or did at one time.  I never saw one but saw them advertized.  I wanted one to put one on an original Favorite but could never locate one.  What I did was purchase the flat based universal grooved scope mount material from Brownells and had a gunsmith cut a short piece and drill and tap the the barrel on the octagon flat and install with 3 screws.  This allows you use Weaver .22 type rings.  Installed a 2.5-7x32 air rifle scope by BSA.  Works well.  I did this on a beater Favorite with a replacement barrel (no collector this).  Should work equally well on the Model 30.  To use the open sights just remove the scope.  2520
