 Isn't it great to hear about Jane Fonda getting slamed. Think we can get the folks in Ga to vote a bounty on her?

Georgia Senate Defeats Fonda Resolution

Jeff Christensen, AP

The Georgia Senate voted 38 to 1 to defeat a resolution that would have honored Jane Fonda's charity work in the state.

ATLANTA (March 16) - Jane Fonda's 1972 trip to North Vietnam is haunting her again. The Georgia Senate on Thursday nearly unanimously defeated a resolution that would have honored the actress' charity work in the state.

The Democratic sponsor had tried to withdraw the resolution after a rocky reception from colleagues and a phone call from Fonda's office, but a Republican leader forced a vote, saying members of his caucus wanted to go on record against it.

Fonda, who is out of the country, had asked for the resolution to be withdrawn to avoid the controversy, said the sponsor, Sen. Steen Miles of suburban Atlanta.

The effort was defeated 38-1, with even Miles voting against it.

The resolution cited the Atlanta resident's work as founder of the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention, donations to universities and charities, and role as goodwill ambassador for the United Nations.

But Fonda's political activities protesting the Vietnam War, including a trip to North Vietnam in 1972, have long made her a target of veterans.

"I can think of no living American who is less worthy of this honor," Republican Sen. John Douglas declared. "She is as guilty of treason as Benedict Arnold and Tokyo Rose."

Miles argued that Fonda's good works should outweigh the negatives.

Jane fonda was a traitor over 30 years ago and is today. She should have been tried for treason. I have no use for her. POWDERMAN.  :x  :x  :x  :x  :x  :x

War's over for me. People did what they did, time in my opinion to let it go and stop allowing that war to tear us apart. Keeping the hate alive does more to one's own soul than it does anything else.

Daks - the war has been over for me for a long time, but I cant forgive treason.  She gave solace to the enemy and that resulted in more American dead.  Someone once said that if we could see into the future we would do things differently and after reading that article I wonder if that would have applied to her but somehow I don't think so.  Zealots and activisists rarely think of the long term consequences of their actions and refuse to even consider someone elses situation.  She did what she wanted to do and she still suffers the consequences of her action.

She is getting her just rewards.  JMHO.  Mikey.

Seems to me her political activism hasn't stopped with Vietnam.  Just a few months ago there was talk of Hanoi Jane making a bus tour around the country to protest the war in Iraq.

She's has softened her position in some areas, but I think its like a tiger trying to loose it's stripes.  It's still a tiger.

Fair enough. I'm not trying to say anyone who still hates Jane Fonda is wrong. I'm just trying to give a different perspective on her.

Have a look at this article. Someone put Fonda up for some award and when she heard about the controversy it was causing, she asked that it be withdrawn. That should have ended the issue and if honoring Fonda were the only issue at play here, it would have.

Yet some bozo politician decides he wants to get a little mileage out of this by dredging up old stuff, reopening old wounds and uses this as a vehicle to be seen as being "tough" to his constituents. It is all about appearances. Jane Fonda is no threat to anything except the blood pressure. However, a politician sees an issue he can get some mileage out of for the next election and people go up in flames yet again.

It is manipulation, pure and simple, in my opinion. This politician is using the issue of what Jane Fonda did to maybe get people to view him favorably. We oblige him in this process by allowing our hot buttons to be pushed yet again. It is how politicians can fool us into thinking they are working for us while in reality, they are just manipulating our emotions.

To me, carrying hatred around does nothing except make one's own life darker. Hatred eats away at people and carrying it for years is, to me, like allowing a cancer to corrode one's soul. Shedding one's self of this sort of useless baggage is tremendously uplifting. Other people can use this to their advantage, as this politician is finding. I don't hate anyone. I might not exactly love them and I sure don't forget what has happened, but I figure that I've done things in my life I need to be forgiven for so I'm not so quick to withold forgiveness from others. Just trying to live out the rest of the week the words I hear at Mass on Sunday, that's all.

Oh, without a doubt, there's some manipulation going on.  But it ain't the pols doing it!  Just like Teddy crawls out of his Mass. hole every once in a while and tries to reinvent himself.  But it don't work.  Won't work for Hanoi Jane neither.

BTW, yes she has done some good stuff............... with Ted's money.

I think the Ga pols are to be applauded.

gotta agree with Daks on this one. it looks and smells like a bunch of grandstanding, hey look what i'm doing to represent your interests, politicans to me as well. that does not excuse what fonda did, nothing will do that, but in this case she seems to be the lesser of the two.  T

I don't hate Jane Fonda.  I hate what she did.  I hate what the result of her crime was.  I don't respect her and think she is guilty of treason and responsible for many other problems surrounding the Vietnam war and particularly for the treatment of our POW's who were demorilzed by her actions.   Let's say, for the sake of an argument that she has repented.  There is still the problem of restitution.   Just because a criminal repents doesn't relieve him or her from paying the price for commiting a crime.

The message is hate the sin but love the sinner.  Hanoi Jane hasn't said what I need to hear and hasn't really tried to make things right.  I'm not sure she can.  I appreciate what she has done for charity sake but still question her motive.

I think people hate Jane Fonda for what she did. I don't think many folks can separate the sin from the sinner. That's why grandstanding by people like this politician can work to push our buttons. I have to wonder just exactly what interests of the people of his district he is representing that causes him to push this vote in the face of an attempted withdrawal of the resolution. Withdrawing the resolution would have solved the issue if honoring Jane Fonda were the only thing on the table. He wanted more. He wanted to make sure everyone SAW him being against Jane Fonda even  though the issue was effectively dead.

If that isn't grandstanding and button-pushing, I don't know what is. I have no respect for that sort of thing.

While I agree that there isn't a pol that isn't looking for the (a) lime light but in this case, I think Fonda's crew, when they saw what was happening, wanted to slip away to try another day.  And the one pol said, no, let's see what EVERYONE thinks (including Fonda's toady).
Fonda got what she deserved.
And while this "hate the sin but love the sinner" is very fine and noble, I'm a little more Old Testament myself.
