Questions on my glass bedding job
« on: March 06, 2006, 10:39:06 AM »
Bedded one of muzzleloaders, I free floated the barrel and bedded the front and rear recoil lugs. The rear action sits a hair higher than the front recoil lug. Is this OK? , Should i rebed this? And will this hurt accuracy?
The barrel is still free floated.

It's really hard to tell how it's going to affect accuracy as some guns like a pressure point out on the barrel.  I suggest shooting it and if you don't like it then you can grind it out and start over.

The main reason to bed the action is so the action doesn't move in the stock.  Just guessing, but being a hair high or low isn't as important as securing the action in the stock and I'm not sure how you would tell if it was "square in the stock".  I try to get the action to fit right so the lines of the metal and wood match up......probably more cosmeticly appealing if it matches up right..

I had a .243 Ruger I tried 9 different bedding jobs on just to see what would happen.

I probably won't go to those extremes again and would first bed the action and float the barrel.......if it didn't shoot I'd add shim stock under the barrel and see if it improved.  In my somewhat limited experience the heavier the barrel the more they tend to shoot better free floated........light barrels it's hard to tell as I've only had a couple of ultra lights and one shot better floated and the other like a pressure point.

This is one of those things you need to have a little patience with and just enjoy it........It's a beautiful thing when you get it just right!

It's likely more a cosmetic problem than an accuracy one. I usually bed the action, then add barrel bedding if needed.
