Brag on your bullets here.
« on: March 08, 2006, 10:02:14 AM »
Just getting back into muzzleloading since I sold my Hawken years ago. Got me a new in-line with a 30"barrel. Was planning on using powerbelt bullets cause I heard they were so good. After doing some research I found out 2 things about them. 1) They're expensive as hell, and 2) People are having problems with them, particularly the lighter hollow points. I'd appreciate anybody who has had good luck with any other bullet (especially a less expensive one) to brag on their bullets. I'm really looking for something that is dependable on anything you shoot at out to 200 yards the size of an Elk or smaller. Would appreciate powder charges too. thanks..alan

Check out Precision rifles bullets. They have different price ranges and I shoot there 195 gr. duplex bullets over 90 gr. of loose triple7. I got the best accuracy from these bullets. I have tried a bunch of different M/L sabots and combinations, but nothing comes close to Precision rifles bullets. I did have luck with the 295 gr. power belts also.  :D

I've only used them one year ond only shot one deer with them but I like the Hornady SST's.  Accuracy and performance are great.  My buck went only as far as downhill carried him.
I tried some of the Precision bullets but couldn't get them to shoot in my gun.  I am going to try some in heavier weights because I hear good things about them all the time.

A.J.,

IMO - the best least expensive out there right now is the Speer Gold Dot...
300 grain for thick skinned animals and 250 grain for deer - if you can use copper clad bullets.... They are a bonded bullet and the expansion is awesome....  Go to shoot them with a pretty stout load the get the best grouping - but they can also be shot to fast and they start spreading....

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

Barnes 285gr. Spitfire MZ. I only hunt whitetails but one of my friend used it on an elk hunt last year and the penatration and expansion of the bullet was great. He said he shot the elk at 120yrds broadside but slighly quartering away, the bullet entered behind the right shoulder and went through the left shoulder, breaking the shoulder bone and it still went through the bull. He was using 130gr of 777's pellets to push the bullet. Now that is a great bullet to brag about especally on an big 6x6 bull elk :-D . My experience with the bullet has been great too  . I've shot four deer in the past 4 years that I started hunting with a muzzy. All the deer drop dead on thier track once my muzzy bark and all were past through. The entrance hole look about the size of a nickle but the exit hole is the size of a half dollar or bigger. I've never really used other bullets except for some lead conicle bullets when I was breaking in my gun. Then after breaking in my gun I tried the barnes and the groups was great so I've stick with it ever since. By the way I use 100gr 0f 777's pellets to push them.

I think you have to experience different bullets to see what your gun likes. I guess I was lucky enough to just try one kind and my gun liked it.

This year will be the first time my son Cody and I hunt with our muzzle loaders.  I really like the way the T.C. XTP Mag Sabots in 300 grn shoot out of my Tradition pursuit Pro with 100 grns of FFG. And whats nice is they are $11.00 for 30 at Cabala's.

Been getting good results with 200 gr shock waves for whitetails over 100 grains of triple seven. Very accurate in my Omega.

The Dead Centers are good bullets, but not all guns like them.  And if you liek high velocities, I know few people who get accuracy with them over 1800-2000 fps (depending on the gun).  They are also on the expensive side.

I switched to the Shockwave/SSTs.  The 200gr and 110gr 777 get about 2100 fps out of my Omega and shoot sub MOA.

Hornady XTP 300 grain ...You can't beat it!

Here is a picture of one that I pulled out of a nice 8 point this year, It retained arround 92 percent of its origional weight after it went through 4 bones and came to rest between the hide and the shoulder.

I tell you, that 4 shot group Utahrob shot with those XTP's was impressive, and while I may wind up with them, I think I'm going to start off with the 285 grain Barnes bullets. Looks like they've got the best combination of trajectory and down-range punch. I'm not greedy, but I'd like to make my Winchester an honest 200 yard rifle. It'll probably be awhile, but I'll let you know how things turn out. Was debating between loose or pellets in 777, but I think I'll start off with loose powder. It's a little more economical, and weight-for-weight seems to give a little higher velocity than pellets. For some reason I'm limited to 100 grains loose powder or 150 grains pellets in my rifle...alan
