cutting down stock on Moisin-Nagant
« on: March 01, 2006, 11:59:05 AM »
I've  ever been into one of these, so I'm hoping to talk to someone wha has.

I've trimmed down the stocks on a couple of Swedes and made slim full-stocked rifles that look quqite good. I know that some military rifles have cavities in the stockwork that precludes doing this effectively, f'rinstance the handgaurd clip slots in the forend of a SM:LE.

I'm thinking of trying this with a M-N, making a Mannlicher-style large-caliber woods rifle with a 22" or so bbl. This would be to shoot maybe .416 cast bullets, paper jacketed, with b.ack powder

Does anyone know of any voids in the stock that would break through on a severe cut-down? Any other potential problems in this sort of conversion on the Russian????

Decided to use a Mauser.... there isn't a pretty rifle hiding anywhere in a M-N :-)

I think you made the right choice, as you were indicating that you wanted to change the caliber as well.

While in some countries there are supplies to conver MN's from 7.62x54R to other calibers, such parts seem to be very limited and gunsmiths unwilling to do so in the US for modest costs.

Likewise, the availability of after-market barrels, stocks, triggers, bolts, alternate safeties, sights, scope mounts, etc. for mausers is huge compared to that for MN's.

Having said that I like my MN 1891/30 1939 Tula and wouldn't trade it nor would I seriously modify it because of the history it was part of.

Good luck on your mauser project.
