44 mag loads?
« on: February 27, 2006, 05:03:10 PM »
I'm not finding it elsewhere, so I'll check with you guys.  I know there's some 44 mag Handi shooters here, what are your favorite hunting loads?

Start with factory loads if you use them.  As most know, I reload, but not setup for the 44 yet.

I'm getting a Win 94 Trapper in 44 and want to use it for deer, bear, maybe hogs if I get the chance.  Should I figure about 150yds being top end for these critters?

The twist on the Win is 1- -26 so it should handle heavy bullets OK.

Handi I'm using the 300 gr. XTP with a max load of H 110 of 22.5 grs.,seated in the 2 nd. channelure. They chrono at 1660 fps.   It depends on how big the hog is,but I would stay under 125 yds with my shots with my load.   :D  :D  Digger

I used the 300 XTP with 19.5 grains of H4227 with OAL of 1.72 and was happy.  Changed to 1.60 OAL and the groups doubled.  Have unburned powder in both.  Slugged the barrel per everyone's advice.  Is .432 necessitating ordering of some Beartooth 265 grain at .432 diameter.  Haven't loaded them yet.

Groups were about 2" at 100 with the original load.

Shoots the Winchester 240 JSP white box ammo pretty good at $17/box.  I haven't used them on a deer or a hog, but a couple of guys at work are real happy with them.

Thanks fella's mine will actually be for a Win 94 and am wondering what factory COAL std's are?  The 44 is new to me but looks like a fun caliber.

Did you chrono that first load?  I have yet to find out how long a setup it will tolerate.

How long are your loads?  Would it over pressure at the first cannelure?

Regretably, I don't have a chrono.  For what it is worth, the Winchester 240 JSP is 1.590 on average.

I didn't check the overall lenght with the 300gr. XTP's but I crimped in the 2nd. channelure. I reamed it shortly afterwards and it now a 445 supermag. You might try seating the bullets .010 of the lands and try it. Digger

Well the gun is still in the CA 10 dya waiting period.  Once I get my hads on it and some reloading tools, I'll give it a whirl.
Thanks.

Yep,the one close'st to the base is what I call the 2 nd. channelure.I wouldn't crimp it until you're sure it will cycle through you lever gun.  Digger
