Winchester Ballistic Silvertips
« on: November 05, 2005, 04:54:48 AM »
Bought two boxes on Winchester Ballistic Silvertips for my .223. One box of 50gr. one box of 55gr.  Went to the range yesterday to try out the ammo to see which one would group better out of my Savage Model 10FP.  Was very disappointed with the quality of this ammo.... Neither would group worth a s*&%... I know it was not me because the gun shoots clover leaf patterns all day with Federal 55gr. ballistic tips. Even the cheap white box 45gr. Walmart special Winchester shells group better than the Black box silvertip crap that costs twice as much.. Won't buy it again..

Just because it doesn't shoot in your rifle doesn't make the ammo junk. It is definitely premium quality ammo. BUT that doesn't assure it will be accurate in every rifle. Factory ammo shooters must try several types to see what their rifle likes just as reloaders try loads of loads to find what their rifles like.

Calling premium ammo poor quality because it's not accurate in YOUR rifle shows a misunderstanding of the fact that not every barrel shoots the same ammo equally well.

Still I do agree with your bottom line, you shouldn't buy it again since your rifle doesn't like it.

Sorry if I upset anyone with my statements.... I will just stick to the Federal ammo., as my gun likes it a little better...  Sorry again if I offended anyone.

Not upset or offended. It just sounded like you were saying that a premium ammo was junk cuz it wouldn't shoot in your particular gun. I was merely pointing out that is quite normal. Not all ammo will shoot in any given gun but that doesn't make the ammo any less well made or less accurate in the guns of others. Personally I don't shoot all that much factory ammo and for sure not the Winchester stuff but it is excellent quality tho.

My .30-06 loves those Silvertips.  I haven't tried them in my .223 yet.  I have a NEF .223.  I have great groups with Winchester White Box 45 gr. JHP's.  For $15 for a box of 40 you can't go wrong.
Ruger 10/22, Ruger GP100 .357, Marlin 336 .35 Rem, NEF Handi Rifle .223, Remington 7600 .30-06, Browning BPS 12 ga, Remington 870 12 ga, Iver Johnson Champion 16 ga.

You need to completely remove the copper fouling from your barrel, and try them again.  Many times, shooting a coated bullet like that in a copper fouled barrel leads to disappointing accuracy.  Same with shooting regular jacketed bullets in a barrel fouled with any type of coating.

I can't say about the factory stuff, but the Ballistic Silvertips I have been loading and shooting from my Ruger #1  7mm Rem mag will make one hole groups as long as I do my part.
