Why use sun shades?
« on: March 09, 2006, 04:44:10 AM »
I'm wondering how beneficial sunshades are when using higher powered scopes (18-24x) for varmint/target shooting?

Why use sun shades?

Makes a huge difference if sun is from 10 to 2 as per your orientation and at less than 45 degrees from horizon.  I also wear a big brimmed hat to keep sun out of my eyes.  If you are there all day on a knoll looking at dogs, it doesn't take much glare to give you a whopping migraine.
Plus, use a good set of binos to spot with and call for your buddy.  We swap out shooter and spotter every half hour.  The shooter stays off the scope until called to action by the spotter.  Mind you, we are talking about 300 to 500 rounds in the blazing hot sun so fatigue adds up.

Sunshades

Once you see how well a sunshade works you'll soon see you need something to block light between the scope and your eye, then you'll start thinking how the interior of the scope's opaque surfaces need to be coated with paint that absorbs light.
